(Close shot of Jack on the phone, pacing and frowning.)

(Wide shot of Jack standing behind his desk.)

My father worked at NORCOM over half his life.

(Jack reaches into a desk drawer.)

JACK: Ah-huh.

(Jack pulls out a bottle and takes the lid off.)

JACK: Ah-huh.

(He tilts some pills into his palm.)

JACK: Well, Ferguson's goin' to blow his top over this.

(He put the bottle back in the drawer and closes it.)

And eventually...

(Jack walks around to the front of his desk.)

He rose to the ranks of middle management.

JACK: Yeah, fine. Fine. I'll take care of it

Where every day, was filled with crisis...

(Jack hangs up.)

Challenges...

(Jack frowns and pops a Rol-Aids in his mouth.)

And Rol-Aids. Yep...

(Shot past Jack through his office window onto the shop-floor below. the camera moves in slowly on the shop-floor, of workers standing around, and pushing large crates.)

Through the years my father had given a lot to NORCOM...

(Sound of a loud buzzer.)

And now...

Cut to

Shop Floor

(Wayne is pushing the mail-cart past guys moving a large box.)

He had given them...

WAYNE: That's it - you guys are doin' great.

Wayne.

(The camera pans as Wayne pushes his cart and looks at another employee.)

WAYNE: That goes over to "C", right?

(Wayne looks at a small box in front of a man.)

My brother had been employed in the mail-room for about six months. Don't ask me how.

(The camera pans as Wayne pauses and smiles at two guys wearing safety-goggles.)

WAYNE: Nice shades, man. (Nods.)

(The camera pans past another man as Wayne pushes the cart.)

And if his work-ethic didn't exactly match Dad's...

(Wayne turns the cart and pulls it backwards.)

At least he was trying to find a niche for himself.

(Shot past the woman as Wayne looks at her.)

(Wayne leans on her counter and smiles.)

(Shot past Wayne as the woman looks up angrily.)

(Shot past Bonnie of Wayne smiling and talking.)

It was no wonder Wayne felt the way he did.

(Wide shot of Jack through his office window, looking out, with his arms crossed.)

Whatever Dad felt about all of this...

(Jack looks down.)

He was keeping it to himself. Like all the Arnold men...

(Kevin frowns as he looks at Jeff and gestures.)

KEVIN: I don't get it! I mean, what did I do, anyway?

(Close shot of Jeff frowning.)

JEFF: Well, let's see. Off-hand, I'd say you embarrassed her, ruined her reputation, and lied about your relationship.

(Shot of Kevin and Jeff as Kevin looks at Winnie off-screen.)

(They look at each other.)

JEFF: I'd say you were a perfect gentleman.

(Norma pauses, and Bonnie looks at Jack.)

(The camera passes some kids as a frisbee flies past them, and a man getting ready to throw a football.)

(Shot of Jack, Norma, Wayne, Bonnie and David at a picnic table.)

Almost everywhere.

(Wayne is holding David out. David is crying.)

WAYNE: Yes, David. Hello. How are you?

BONNIE: You just have to rock him a little bit, Wayne.

(Shot of Jack and Norma looking toward David.)

BONNIE (V/O): Aw, come on...

(Shot of Wayne, David, and Bonnie, as Wayne bounces David.)

WAYNE: OK, David - here you go...

(Wayne turns toward Norma and Jack off-screen and frowns.)

WAYNE: I...think he likes me.

BONNIE: Oh, maybe your mom would like to try?

(Shot of Jack and Norma.)

WAYNE (V/O): Good luck!

(Norma stands and reaches forward.)

NORMA: Come here, angel...

(Bonnie leans forward and hands David to Norma.)

NORMA: Oh, look at this beautiful baby...oooh...

(Close shot of Bonnie looking toward Norma and smiling.)

(Shot of Jack and Norma. Jack is smiling at David, as Norma turns to him.)

NORMA: Remember when Kevin and Wayne were this small?

(Norma looks at David.)

JACK: It was a long time ago, Norma. (Smiles.)

(Jack squeezes David's foot.)

(Norma looks at Jack and taps David's butt.)

NORMA: Wayne had the cutest little behind...

(Shot of Wayne and Bonnie.)

WAYNE: Mom! (Frowns.)

(Bonnie smiles at Wayne and looks back to Norma off-screen.)

BONNIE: He still does. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Jack pausing over his beer.)

(Close shot of Norma looking at Bonnie off-screen.)

(Shot of a cook at a large barbeque. The camera pans with Cindy as she walks from behind it toward Kevin. She hops in front of him.)

CINDY: Kevin, if you were an animal, what animal would you like to be?

(Closer shot of Kevin and Cindy.)

CINDY: You can be any animal you want. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin glancing off, then looking at Cindy off-screen.)

KEVIN: What animal? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Cindy looking at Kevin off-screen.)

CINDY: I bet you'd make a good bird - I can see you flying around...(twirls)...and looking at everything...

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah, I-I guess, uh...(frowns)...a bird...sounds OK. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin and Cindy. She smiles and looks off.)

CINDY: Look there's some swings over there...

(She walks past Kevin and turns.)

CINDY: You want to try 'em out? Lets go try 'em out?!

KEVIN: Uh, uh, why don't you go ahead. (Gestures.) I'll be right over.

CINDY: OK, neat. See you soon, "Mr. Bird"...

(Cindy exits. Kevin looks after Cindy off-screen and frowns.)

CINDY (V/O): Bye!

Somehow in the cold light of Sunday...

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Cindy trotting toward the swings.)

Cindy's chirpiness was becoming too chirpy.

(Close shot of Kevin looking down, frowning.)

Worst of all...

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Wayne holding David in the distance, as Cindy trots toward the swings in the background.)

I missed Winnie more than ever.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and looking toward Wayne off-screen.)

I needed some grown-up conversation...

(Wide shot of Wayne and David, as Kevin approaches in the background.)

Well, as close as I could get.

(Closer shot of Wayne rubbing David's back.)

KEVIN (V/O): Hey.

(Wayne looks at Kevin as Kevin enters the shot.)

WAYNE: Hi.

(They walk forward. The camera rolls with them on Kevin's side.)

KEVIN: You know, you're doing really well.

WAYNE: Well, I'll get the hang of it.

(Shot from Wayne's side as they walk.)

But I couldn't help getting the feeling Wayne was a little overwhelmed...

KEVIN: You sure this is OK. You know, you taking care of the baby, and everything?

(Wayne gestures.)

WAYNE: What's that supposed to mean?

KEVIN: Nothing - it doesn't mean anything.

Of course, I was just trying to say that I hoped David wouldn't spit up on him or something, but...

(Shot from Kevin's side.)

WAYNE: I'll do a lot better once Bonnie and I move in together.

(Kevin slows up as Wayne walks past the camera.)

KEVIN: What? (Frowns.)

(Shot past Kevin of Wayne, and Cindy on the swings in the background.)

KEVIN: You're gonna live together?

WAYNE: Yeah! (Smiles.) It'll be great, huh? (Gestures.)

(Wayne looks at David, who is crying.)

WAYNE: I wanta take David to football games, to baseball games...I'm gonna have to buy him a glove...

(Wayne glances at Kevin and smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Wayne off-screen.)

It was unbelievable.

(Kevin glances off and frowns, then looks back toward Wayne.)

(Shot past Kevin of Wayne, and Cindy on the swings in the background. Wayne is bouncing David.)

I was standing there, watching my brother make a decision that would affect his entire life.

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Well, did you tell Mom and Dad? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Wayne.)

WAYNE: No...not yet. (Shrugs.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning.)

KEVIN: Don't you think you should?

(Close shot of Wayne.)

WAYNE: No, why - what?

(He frowns and gestures.)

WAYNE: Are they my parents or something?

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Wayne off-screen.)

(Shot past Kevin of Wayne looking at David and bouncing him.)

WAYNE: Come on, you little peanut. You want to go see mommy? Yeah, you do...

(Wayne walks past Kevin and out of the shot. Kevin turns after him. Cindy is approaching in the background.)

WAYNE (V/O): Here we go...

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Wayne approaching Bonnie and Norma.)

WAYNE: I think he did something...

(Shot of Kevin looking at Wayne off-screen as Cindy approaches behind him.)

CINDY: Kevin? I have an idea...

(Kevin turns to her.)

CINDY: Let's see who can eat our hotdogs the fastest!

(She smiles and raises up on her toes. Kevin looks off quickly.)

Cut to

Ext. Day - Parking Lot

(Wide shot of Kevin carrying a cooler, and Cindy carrying a lawn-chair across the parking lot. The camera pans with them.)

CINDY: I think I like the hamburgers a little bit more than the hotdogs - but I'm not sure.

(Cindy looks over her shoulder at Kevin and smiles.)

CINDY: I could have liked the hotdogs more.

By the end of the picnic, I couldn't wait to get home...make my escape.

(They reach the trunk of Kevin's car, and set the stuff down.)

Face it - this whole thing had been a disaster.

(Kevin unlocks the trunk, and starts to lift it, then looks off.)

NORMA (V/O): Wayne! You can't do this.

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Wayne and Norma face-to-face, near Jack's car.)

I guess it was a disaster for everybody.

(Wayne has his hands on his hips, and glances off.)

WAYNE: Mom - we already decided.

(Wider shot of the side of Kevin's car as he steps forward, looking at Wayne and Norma off-screen.)

NORMA (V/O): But you're only eighteen years old.

(Shot past Kevin and his car of Wayne and Norma. Wayne holds his hands out together.)

WAYNE: Don't you understand? We're in love!

(Close shot of Norma in profile, turned away from the camera, then shaking her head and frowning.)

NORMA: How can you be so sure?

(Close shot of Wayne.)

WAYNE: What are you talking about? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Norma in profile.)

NORMA: Look - I know that Bonnie needs you...(nods)...and that makes you feel very good. But need isn't love.

(Shot of Wayne and Norma.)

WAYNE: I don't believe this. (Gestures.) You don't know anything!

NORMA: I just don't want you to get hurt!

(Wayne frowns and points his finger at Norma angrily.)

WAYNE: You...just don't want to see me grow up!

(Wayne leans closer to Norma.)

WAYNE: I want you to stay out of this, and I want you to butt out of my life! You got it?

(Wayne hesitates, then waves and shakes his head, and exits.)

(Shot of Kevin next to his car as looks down frowning, and flips the trunk open.)

CINDY: Oh, look!

(Shot of the bear in the trunk.)

CINDY (V/O): A stuffed bear...!

(Shot past the open trunk as Kevin turns toward Cindy off-screen.)

CINDY (V/O): It's adorable!

(Shot past Kevin of Cindy looking at the bear.)

CINDY: He's so cute and cuddley...

(Wide shot of both from behind the car.)

KEVIN: Cindy, it's just a bear! Will you forget about it? (Gestures.)

(Shot past Kevin of Cindy. She frowns.)

CINDY: Don't have to be such a grouch. You sound just like my brother.

(Cindy frowns and rolls her head slightly.)

CINDY: He's in high school, too.

(She looks down.)

(Close shot of Kevin leaning forward on the side of the trunk, looking at Cindy off-screen.)

Wait a minute...

(Kevin looks perplexed.)

KEVIN: Wait a minute.(Frowns.)

(Kevin looks off and steps toward the rear of the car, then frowns at Cindy.)

KEVIN: Where do you go to school?

(Close shot of Cindy.)

CINDY: Kennedy...

(She wrinkles her nose.)

(Close shot of Kevin.)

(Kevin squints and blinks.)

KEVIN: What...grade are you in?

(Clos shot of Cindy. She wrinkles her nose again.)

CINDY: Seventh. Does it matter?

(Shot past Cindy of Kevin. He hesitates, then gestures with both arms.)

KEVIN: Well, yeah, it does. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Cindy looking down and sighing.)

CINDY: I was afraid you'd say that.

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward the bear. He hesitates, then looks at Cindy and frowns.)

KEVIN: Why don't you take the bear? (Nods.)

(Shot of both from behind the car.)

KEVIN: I don't want it.

(Cindy reaches in the trunk.)

CINDY: Thanks!

(Cindy hugs the bear.)

CINDY: I'm gonna name him Kevin!

And there you had it.

Cut to

Int. Night - Arnold Kitchen

(Shot of the door as Kevin enters.)

The perfect end to a perfect day.

KEVIN: Hi.

(The camera pulls back behind the table toward the wall as Kevin slides a chair out and sits. Jack is sitting at the opposite end.)

JACK: How you doin'?

(Kevin sighs and sets his hands on the table.)

KEVIN: Lousy.

(Close shot of Jack.)

JACK: Join the club. (Smiles.)

(Jack looks down, then quickly toward the kitchen.)

(Shot of the kitchen as Wayne approaches with a bag of stuff over his shoulder. He pauses and sighs, and looks at Jack off-screen.)

WAYNE: So where's Mom?

JACK (V/O): She, uh...went to bed.

(Wayne nods, then turns toward the door.)

WAYNE: I'm gettin' outta here.

(Shot past Wayne of Jack.)

JACK: Wayne!

(Jack frowns and rises, holding the other chair. The camera pans toward Wayne slightly as Jack looks at him.)

JACK: Can we talk for a minute?

(Shot past Jack of Wayne.)

WAYNE: Dad, there's nothing to talk about.

(Wayne looks off.)

WAYNE: I-I'm doing this, and that's it! (Gestures.)

(Shot past Wayne of Jack.)

JACK: Fine!

(He nods and gestures.)

JACK: If that's what you have to do.

(Shot past Jack of Wayne, as Wayne looks down and nods.)

Guess it wasn't exactly the answer Wayne had expected.

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward Wayne off-screen, then Jack off-screen.)

(Wide shot of the three of them.)

JACK: Look, I, uh...just got one thing to say, so bear with me, OK?

(Jack slides the chair out and points to it. Wayne drops his stuff on it and puts his hands in his pockets.)

JACK: You know...

(Jack sighs and sits down.)

(Shot past Wayne of Jack looking at him, then frowning and holding his cup.)

JACK: I, uh...

(Jack looks at Wayne.)

JACK: Started working at NORCOM right after the Marines.

(Jack glances toward Kevin off-screen, then back to Wayne, and smiles slightly.)

JACK: I was twenty-four, and I thought I was gonna be out of there in no time.

(He looks off and frowns.)

JACK: I was gonna try some different things. Take some chances.

(Jack looks at Wayne.)

JACK: I figured...

(Shot of Wayne frowning as he looks at Jack.)

JACK (V/O: I had my whole life ahead of me.

(Shot of Jack looking off.)

JACK: But before I knew it...

(Jack looks at Wayne.)

JACK: There was a family...a home...a mortgage.

(Jack looks off in thought and frowns.)

JACK: And...

In a way...

(Shot of Kevin looking at Jack off-screen. The camera moves in very, very slowly.)

I knew it was the hardest thing Dad had ever done. He was speaking from the heart. He was speaking out of love.

(Close shot of Jack looking off.)

JACK: All I'm saying is...

(He frowns and shakes his head.)

WAYNE (V/O): Dad!

(Jack looks toward Wayne.)

(Close shot of Wayne.)

WAYNE: That's your life. Not mine.

(Wayne looks toward his bag.)

(Close shot of Jack looking off, a little mistily.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Jack off-screen, then Wayne off-screen.)

(Shot of Wayne.)

WAYNE: I gotta get goin'.

(Wayne picks up his bag and heads for the door. The camera pans with him as he opens it. Kevin and Wayne look at each other for a moment, then Wayne walks out.)

WAYNE: Seeya.

(Wayne elbows the door closed.)

(Shot from the doorway of Kevin and Jack looking toward Wayne off-screen, as the door closes. Jack is framed in the central window of the door, and looks forward.)

(Wide shot of Kevin and Jack.)

And then...he was gone.

(Close shot of Kevin as he turns forward and looks at Jack off-screen.)

And we were left.

(Close shot of Jack looking forward sadly.)

And that house seemed a little emptier.

(Jack looks down.)

Fade to

Ext. Night - Winnie's Porch

(Shot of the door as Winnie opens it.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Hi. You got a sec? (Frowns.)

That night I went back to Winnie's. I'm not sure why.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie looking at him.)

All I knew was...

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

What I said had to be perfect.

(Kevin looks up, then smiles.)

KEVIN: Nice night, huh?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She frowns.)

WINNIE: Kevin, we've been through this.

(She sighs and leans against the doorway.)

KEVIN: I know.

(Shot of Kevin as he looks off.)

KEVIN: And I know that...

(Ke looks at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: I shouldn't even be here. And I know you don't even want to talk to me!

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KEVIN (V/O): Winnie...

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN: I know I did somethin' terrible. Somethin' horrible, and if I could take it back...(gestures)...I would.

(Close shot of Winnie.)

KEVIN (V/O): You know I just wish you'd do something aweful to me, and then we could be even.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: But, uh...you'd never do that.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

KEVIN: Anyway...

(Close shot of Kevin. He shrugs and smiles.)

KEVIN: Never mind.

(Kevin glances at Winnie, then walks away. He sighs and turns back, gesturing, and walks toward Winnie.)

KEVIN: It's just all this stuff is happening! My brother - he left home, he's gone. And, and I...just need someone to talk about it with.

(Close shot of Winnie.)

KEVIN (V/O): You're the only one I could think of.

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN: You've always been the only one, Winnie...

(Close shot of Winnie.)

KEVIN (V/O): And I just...wanted you to know that.

(Kevin glances down, then shrugs. He glances at Winnie then turns away.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie as Kevin walks toward the camera.)

WINNIE: What happened to the bear?

(Kevin pauses.)

(Shot from behind Kevin as he turns around.)

KEVIN: It's...kind of a long story. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: Maybe you'd like to tell me about it. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin.)

WINNIE (V/O): You want to come in for awhile?

KEVIN: Yeah. (Smiles.) I would.

It was that simple.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She smiles as Kevin approaches.)

And it was that complex.

(Music starts.)

Love can kill you. It can tear you apart.

(Kevin slides past Winnie, smiling.)

But if you're very lucky...

(Winnie reaches for the door.)

It can bring you back together.

(Winnie closes the door.)
