rainbow

OPENING TITLES
Int. Day - Arnold Basement

(Shot of a "Star Trek" episode showing on a black-and-white television.)

CAPTAIN KIRK: There she is. That's the one. What have you done with Spock's brain? What have you--Ahhhhhhh! (An alien woman presses a button on her armband, and the Star Trek men fall, and writhe on the ground.)

(Shot of Paul, Carla, Becky, and Kevin sitting on the couch.)

(Shot of Kevin hesitantly putting his arm around Becky.)

When you're twelve years old you've got a lot of strange new territory to explore.

(Close shot of Becky and Kevin watching TV off-screen.)

For Paul and me, that meant the basement with Carla Healy and Becky Slater.

(They look at each other, then back to the TV off-screen.)

Paul and I...

(Shot of Paul with his arm loosely on Carla's shoulder. They smile at each other then look at the TV.)

Weren't the world's greatest make-out experts...

(Close shot of Becky and Kevin glancing at each other.)

But I figured all I had to do...

(They look at the TV off-screen.)

Was wait for the sign from Becky.

(Shot past Kevin of Becky. A commercial comes on TV. Becky turns to Kevin and kisses him, pushing him backwards.)

That was the sign.

(Shot of Paul and Carla as they embrace and kiss.)

Cut to

Later

(Shot of both couples on the couch, kissing. The light clicks on. The couples straighten up. Paul flips his glasses on as Carla reaches for cookies on the table. They all sit back, and "act casual" as Norma, holding a gallon of bleach, and Wayne, carrying a laundry basket, come down the stairs. Norma eyes the seating arrangements critically as Kevin looks over his shoulder at her.)

KEVIN (Loudly): Hi, Mom. So, you're doing laundry! (Gestures.)

NORMA: Yeah, I thought I would.

(Wayne walks past, putting a towel on Kevin's head.)

WAYNE: You're folding, Kevin.

(Norma takes the towel off Kevin's head as she looks at him. She pauses, then steps closer to Kevin.)

NORMA: Kevin, what's that on your neck?

(Close shot of Kevin getting nervous, and casually covering the hickey with his hand.)

Mom...be cool.

(Close shot of Norma frowning at Kevin off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking off, casually.)

KEVIN: Oh this? It's - it's - it's a bug bite! (Gestures.)

(Close shot of Norma frowning at Kevin off-screen, then glancing off.)

(Shot of the other three on the couch, looking forward glumly. Carla, then Paul, looks toward Kevin off-screen.)

Ugh. It was embarrassing for everyone.

(Wide shot of Kevin and Wayne as Wayne emerges from the laundry room and approaches Kevin.)

WAYNE: Hmmm...

(Wayne claps his hands and rubs them together in preparation. The camera moves in slowly.)

Almost everyone.

(Wayne kneels behind the couch, and pushes Kevin's head over to look at the hickey. Kevin struggles.)

WAYNE: I don't know, Mom. Looks to me as though it just might be...a monstro-hickey.

(Wide shot of Norma in the laundry-room as she looks over her shoulder.)

WAYNE (V/O): A love bite. A big...

(Shot of the others on the couch looking glum.)

WAYNE (V/O):...juicy...lip burn.

(Shot of Kevin and Wayne.)

WAYNE: But, uh...that's just a guess.

(Wayne makes kissing noises. Norma comes out of the laundry with the hamper.)

NORMA (To Wayne): Take this upstairs!

(Wayne stands up and takes the hamper from Norma and makes kissing sounds. Norma swats Wayne on the butt as he exits. Kevin, Carla and Becky look toward Norma.)

(Closer shot of Norma as she inspects the seating arrangements of the kids off-screen.)

NORMA: Why don't you kids come upstairs and watch TV? (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward the TV off-screen.)

KEVIN: Uh...

(Kevin looks toward Norma off-screen.)

KEVIN: Star Trek's almost over.

(Shot of Norma looking at Kevin off-screen.)

NORMA: As soon as it is.

(Wider shot of all on the couch as Norma frowns at Kevin.)

KEVIN: OK.

(Norma exits up the stairs slowly, looking toward the kids.)

(Closer shot of Becky looking toward Norma off-screen.)

CAPTAIN KIRK (On TV): Dr. McCoy, Engineer Scott, and myself...

(Close shot of Kevin smiling slightly at the others off-screen.)

CAPTAIN KIRK (On TV): Were taken prisoner inside a highly complex civilization...

(Shot of Paul, Carla, Becky smiling at Kevin off-screen.)

BECKY: A bug bite?

(Close shot of Kevin smiling at Becky off-screen.)

KEVIN: Well, what did you want me to say? (Gestures.)

(Shot of Paul, Carla, Becky looking at Kevin off-screen.)

BECKY (Smiles): I'll give you a bug bite.

(Shot of Kevin as Becky tries to kiss him, pushing him backwards. They wrestle around.)

KEVIN (V/O): Wait. Get off! Becky!

(Shot of Carla and Paul wrestling as she pins him down and smiles.)

PAUL (V/O): No, no!

(Wide shot of both couples on the couch as they wrestle and make out.)

And so the days passed, carefree and lighthearted. Paul and I seemed to have found a truce in the war of the sexes. Everything was simple, and fun.

(Shot of "Star Trek" on TV. An alien woman presses a button on her wristband. The men are driven painfully to the ground.)

In other words, it had to end.

KIRK (V/O): Hey, Kevin. Come here for a second.

Cut to
Int. Day - School Hallway

(Shot of Kirk near the lockers.)

KIRK: I want to ask you somethin'.

(Shot of Kevin at his locker. He closes his locker and turns around, surprised.)

KEVIN: Huh?! (Frowns.)

(Shot of Kirk.)

KIRK: I want to ask you a favor.

(Kirk motions for Kevin to come over.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

Kirk McCray wanted to ask me a favor? Kirk McCray - who had stolen Winnie away from me...

(Kevin approaches the camera which rolls back.)

Who had humiliated me, defeated me, ruined my life? Eh, but I was over that. I had Becky, and -

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: I need you to talk to Winnie for me.

(Close shot of looking at Kirk off-screen, slightly surprised.)

What?!

KEVIN: What?! (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: I need you to talk to Winnie for me. I mean...

(Kirk glances off, then back.)

KIRK: Well, I understand if you don't want to.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

No, Kirk, I want to talk to Winnie Cooper for you...

(Kevin glances off, frowning.)

Almost as much as I want to be...

(Kevin frowns at Kirk off-screen.)

Stabbed through the heart fifty times with a dull butter knife.

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: But, I mean, she'll take it better coming from you. She really likes you.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

She does?!

(Kevin glances down and back to Kirk off-screen, trying to control his emotions.)

KEVIN: She does?

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Well, yeah. I mean, you guys are really good friends, aren't you?

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and shrugging.)

KEVIN: Yeah, I guess so.

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: So, do you think you can just ask her if - if she still likes me?

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KEVIN: I thought you guys were going steady.

(Shot past Kevin as Kirk steps back and looks away.)

KIRK: Oh, man. (Frowns.) I don't know what's going on.

(The camera pans over slightly as Kirk turns and faces Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: I mean, she didn't say anything, but it's just the way she says it.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KIRK (V/O): You know what I mean?

(Close shot of Kirk frowning at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: She's gonna dump me, I know it.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

Really?!

KEVIN: Really?

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: I don't know. She didn't say anything to you, did she?

(Shot of Kevin near the drinking fountain, as he takes a few steps forward.)

KEVIN: Me? (Gestures.) No. I mean...

(The camera rolls back as Kevin stops in front of Kirk.)

KEVIN: I hardly ever talk to her any more.

(Wider shot of both.)

KIRK: Do you think you can just ask her for me?

(Close shot past Kirk of Kevin frowning and looking away, then at Kirk.)

KEVIN: Kirk, I don't think it'll be...

KIRK (V/O): Please?!

KEVIN: Such a great idea.

(Wide shot of both.)

KIRK: I mean, I don't know what else to do.

(Kirks steps past Kevin and they turn to face each other.)

KIRK: You know, I mean, I've liked girls before and all, but...

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Not like I like her.

(Kirk bends down toward the drinking fountain, then looks at Kevin off-screen and straightens up.)

KIRK: There's just something about her. You know what I mean?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

Yeah.

(Shot of Kevin looking off and thinking.)

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Kevin frowns at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: But I just don't think -

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: If it's a hassle, you know, forget it.

(Kirk frowns and nods as he turns away, pretending to drop the subject.)

(Shot of Kevin frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

Wait a minute - I could do this.

(Kevin glances off.)

What's the big deal?

(Kevin sighs.)

Winnie Cooper's yesterday's news. Anyway, I had "What's-her-name"...

(Kevin frowns in thought.)

Uh, Becky. Yeah, I had Becky.

(Kevin looks after Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Kirk, wait a minute.

(Shot of Kirk turning over his shoulder and looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: You'll do it? (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin looking off as he frowns and nods.)

KEVIN: Yes, I'll do it.

(Wider shot of Kirk. The camera pans slightly as he approaches Kevin, and pats him on the arm.)

KIRK: Thanks, Kev-bo. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin as Kirk exits past him. Kevin frowns and mouths "Kev-bo?".)

"Kev-bo?"

Cut to
School Cafeteria

(Shot of Paul and Kevin at a table. Paul looks at Kevin.)

PAUL: You're gonna what?! (Frowns.)

KEVIN: He just wants me to ask Winnie if she still...

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: You know, still likes him? (Shrugs.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: You can't do that. (Smiles.)

(Paul shakes his head.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Yes, I can. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Kevin, we're talking about Winnie Cooper here. I mean, get real. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Well, what's your point?

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Look, I just know that if Carla dumped me, I could never go and talk to her about liking the guy she dumped me for.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: She didn't dump me, Paul. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Especially if it's somebody like Kirk McCray. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: It doesn't bother me, OK? (Frowns.)

(Kevin looks forward and frowns.)

PAUL (V/O): Somebody older who's, like, twice my size.

(Kevin looks at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: What difference does that make?

(Shot of both. Kevin is looking away as Paul looks at him.)

PAUL: Who's got muscles out to here...(gestures)...and a dark tan in the middle of the winter.

(Kevin turns toward Paul.)

KEVIN (Yelling): Well, maybe I'm not like you, Paul!

(The cafeteria gets quiet as kids look at him.)

(Close shot past Paul of Kevin noticing people staring and lowers his voice.)

KEVIN: Maybe I'm just a little more secure than that, OK? (Frowns.)

(Wide shot as Kevin angrily stands and picks up his lunch tray, spilling the empty milk carton.)

PAUL: Yeah, sure.

(Paul frowns and gestures as Kevin walks around him, then slams down the tray again, losing the rest of what's on it. Kevin leans on the table and looks at Paul.)

KEVIN: There's no way that I can't talk to Winnie! We're still friends! (Gestures.)

(Closer shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: All I have to do is go up to her and say...

(Kevin looks off.)

KEVIN: "Winnie!"

Cut to
Ext. Day - School Athletic Field

(Close up shot of Winnie throwing her hair back, making her a little dizzy, accompanied by harp music.)

(Shot of Kevin standing a short distance away, looking at her off-screen as the music abruptly ends.)

KEVIN: Uh...

(Kevin glances away, uncertainly.)

KEVIN: Eh...

WINNIE: Hi, Kevin.

(Shot of both as Winnie swings a leg up onto the picnic table in front of her. She is wearing her field-hockey uniform. Kevin smiles and looks at her leg.)

KEVIN: Uh...

(Closer shot of Winnie's leg as she massages her calf.)

(As the voice of temptation): Grab her. Squeeze her. Kiss her on the lips!

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and looking toward his shoulder.)

KEVIN: No!

(Close shot of Winnie looking up at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: What?

(Close shot of Kevin smiling and shrugging slightly at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Nothing.

(Close shot of Winnie looking up at Kevin off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen as he shrugs and puts his hands in his jacket pockets.)

KEVIN: I ran into Kirk McCray this afternoon.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at her leg, then Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Oh?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Kevin looks off.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at her leg, then Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: I didn't see him today.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Really?

(Close shot of Winnie's leg as she massages her calf.)

WINNIE (V/O): Yeah.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie's leg off-screen, then glancing off, and shrugging.)

KEVIN: He's a pretty nice guy. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at her leg off-screen.)

WINNIE: Yeah. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin glancing off and sighing.)

KEVIN: Kirk wants to know if you still like him.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Huh? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and shrugging.)

KEVIN: Kirk wants to know if...you still like him. (Frowns.)

(Kevin passes the camera.)

(Wide shot of Winnie as Kevin approaches her. Girls paractice field hockey and cartwheels in the background.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Winnie off-screen.)

(Close shot of Winnie frowning at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Why doesn't he ask me himself?

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Winnie off-screen.)

Because he's a coward, and a fool, not worthy of your -

KEVIN: Uh, because...I guess, um...(shrugs)...he really likes you...(frowns)...and he doesn't want to make you feel weird.

He just wants to make me feel weird.

(Close shot of Winnie frowning and looking off.)

WINNIE: I don't know...

(Winnie looks at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Do you mean do I "like him" like him, or do I just like him?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: The first one, I guess. (Shrugs.)

(Close shot of Winnie as she looks off.)

WINNIE: Well, I like Kirk.

(Winnie brushes the hair from her forehead.)

WINNIE: But I'm not sure I "like him" like him.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Oh. (Frowns.) Are you mad at him?

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: I'm not really mad at him...

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Oh, so you like him.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: I didn't say I "liked" him. I said I liked him.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning slightly at Winnie off-screen.)

KIRK (V/O): Let me have that one more time.

Cut to
Int. Day - School Hallway

(Close shot of Kirk standing with his back against the lockers.)

KIRK: Slowly.

(Shot of Kevin and Kirk.)

KEVIN: She's not mad at you. She likes you. (Gestures.) She's not sure if she "likes you" likes you, but she likes you. (Gestures.) When she first liked you she "liked you" liked you...(shrugs)...unless...

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen, expressionlessly.)

KEVIN (V/O): She just thought she "liked" you when she really just liked you.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: But she likes you.

(Kevin smiles and nods slightly.)

(Close shot of Kirk blinking slowly.)

KIRK: I knew it.

(Kirk looks off as he leans against the locker.)

KIRK: I'm a dead man.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Not necessari-

KIRK (V/O): Come on, you heard her!

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: What am I gonna do?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: I don't know. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: She's waiting for me to make the right move, isn't she? (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Maybe.

(Kevin looks off.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: What's the right move?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen, annoyed.)

KEVIN: I don't know! (Shrugs.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Should I give her something?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: I don't know. You could try. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Yeah? Like what?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: I don't know!

(Kevin frowns heavily and shrugs.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Well, what would you give her?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Look, Kirk...(frowns)...maybe you should just try and figure this out by yourself. I'm, I'm not the best guy to be giving advice about this.

(Shot of both as Kevin turns away.)

KIRK: Wait!

(Kirk taps Kevin on the shoulder, then turns toward his locker and opens it.)

KEVIN: Look, I've got to get to class.

(Kirk closes his locker and turns to Kevin.)

KIRK: How about this?

(Close shot of Kirk holding up his 1968 all-star patch.)

KEVIN (V/O): What is it?

KIRK: My all-star patch.

(Kirk glances at it.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Your all-star patch? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Yeah...

(Kirk glances toward the patch off-screen.)

KIRK: She could, you know...

(Kirk looks at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Sew it on her sweater or jacket.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

KIRK (V/O): Girls do that, don't they?

(Kevin frowns heavily, shrugs, and looks at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: How am I supposed to know? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk turning his head slightly, and smiling slightly at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Kev-bo.

(Close shot of Kevin tilting his head and frowning at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Yeah?

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Will you give this...

(He gestures with the patch.)

KIRK: To Winnie for me?

(Wide shot of both as Kevin rolls his head back and frowns heavily.)

KEVIN: Kirk, come on! (Gestures.)

KIRK: Please?

(Kirk holds both hands in front of him.)

KIRK: This is the last time I'll ask, I swear.

KEVIN: I can't! (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Look, if it was you and you really liked Winnie Cooper, I'd do it for you.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning slightly at Kirk off-screen.)

WINNIE (V/O): What am I supposed to do with this?

(Kevin glances off.)

Cut to
Ext. Day - The Cooper's Front Yard

(Close shot of Winnie.)

KEVIN (V/O): You could sew it on your jacket or sweater.

(Close shot of Kevin, and Winnie's hand holding Kirk's patch. Kevin shrugs.)

KEVIN: I don't know...(Frowns.)

(Wide shot of both in the front yard. Winnie wears gray sweat-pants under her field-hockey uniform. Some gardening tools rest against the wall behind Kevin.)

WINNIE: I can't do that.

KEVIN: It's just a way of showing friendship. (Gestures.)

WINNIE: Come on, Kevin.

(Winnie presses the patch against Kevin's chest. He takes it as she steps past him.)

WINNIE: You know what it means.

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Kevin?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Yeah?

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: I think I have to break up with him.

(Close shot of Kevin as he suppresses a smile, and tries to look sympathetic.)

KEVIN: Really? (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: I think so.

(Winnie looks off.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen, then glances off.)

This may be none of my business, Winnie, but I think...you're doing the right thing.

(Close shot of Winnie looking off.)

WINNIE: I mean, there's no use dragging it out.

(Winnie looks at Kevin off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin nodding, and glancing off.)

You are so right.

(Close shot of Winnie looking off.)

WINNIE: We can still be friends.

(Winnie looks at Kevin off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin nodding, and glancing off.)

Absolutely.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: You know, I really tried. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin shrugging.)

Hey, when it's over...

(Kevin frowns at Winnie off-screen.)

Cut to

(Shot of Kevin and Kirk standing in the hallway. Kevin hands the patch to Kirk.)

KIRK: It's over?! (Frowns.)

KEVIN: I'm sorry.

(Kirk takes a few small steps forward, looking down.)

KIRK: I knew it. She likes someone else.

KEVIN: I don't think she likes someone else. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: Did she say she didn't like someone else?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Well...(frowns)...she didn't say she didn't. (Shrugs.) Look, she said she still wanted to be friends.

(Close shot of Kirk frowning at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: She said that?!

(Wide shot of both.)

KEVIN: Yeah. (Smiles.)

(Kirk looks off.)

I know, I know.

(Kirk frowns heavily, and turns toward the lockers. He begins banging his head against them. Kevin frowns, and looks away as Kirk bangs his head a few times. Kevin holds Kirks arm, and looks at him.)

KEVIN: Kirk, get a grip on yourself. (Frowns.)

(Kirk continues to bang his head. Kevin takes a few small steps toward the camera and pauses.)

But now, Kirk raises an interesting question. What if she does like someone else?

(Kevin smiles in thought.)

Maybe that's what this whole thing is about. But how can you find out without -

Cut to
Cafeteria

(Close shot of Paul frowning slightly.)

KEVIN (V/O): Paul-bo!

PAUL: "Paul-bo"?!

(Shot of Paul sitting at a table as Kevin excitedly spins a chair up to the table backwards, and sits down.)

(Close shot of Kevin interlacing his fingers and looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: I need you to ask Winnie something for me.

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen, and frowning slightly.)

(Twangy guitar music plays.)

Fade to

Later

(Wide shot of Paul and Kevin at the table. Paul is drinking his milk with a straw. Kevin is chewing a French fry.)

KEVIN: Come on, Paul. If you liked Winnie, I'd do it for you.

PAUL: You would not. You'd be mad at me.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning heavily at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Come on, Paul. What's the big deal?

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Well, I can't go up to Winnie and just...ask her if she likes you.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning heavily and shrugging at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: You don't. First, you say "Hi, Winnie!". And she says...

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen blankly.)

(Close shot of Kevin gesturing at Paul off-screen.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen, and hesitating.)

PAUL: Hi, Paul?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Good! (Gestures.) OK..."How are you doing?"

(Close shot of Paul looking off.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Fine! You're fine!

(Kevin looks off, incredulously.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Fine. I'm fine. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: "So, I heard you broke up with Kirk".

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Yeah. (Nods.) I guess I did.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: "Is it because you still like Kevin?"

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Kevin? (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

PAUL (V/O): Kevin Arnold? (Giggles.)

(Kevin frowns.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: You must be joking! (Laughs.)

(Shot of both as Kevin bounces a French fry off Paul's tray.)

KEVIN: Forget it.

(He stands up.)

KEVIN: Forget the whole thing. (Frowns.)

(Closer shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: I thought you were my friend. (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Take it easy. (Gestures.) I'll talk to her.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Never mind.

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: I'll talk to her! (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Yeah?

(Close shot of Paul looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Sure.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Great! (Smiles.)

(Kevin sits down.)

(Shot of Paul picking up his milk carton and drinking from the straw.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning slightly at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: What are you going to say to her?

(Close shot of Paul looking up, setting his milk down, and looking at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: Trust me. (Gestures.)

(Close shot of Kevin blankly looking at Paul off-screen. Paul noisily sucks the last of his milk with a straw, and Kevin glances off and makes a face.)

Cut to
Int. Day - School Hallway

(Shot of Kevin slowly walking up the hallway.)

Things were falling into place. Kirk and Winnie had broken up.

(Closer shot of Kevin approaching the camera and smiling slightly. The camera rolls back with him.)

And why? Because she'd never really forgotten me.

(Twangy guitar music starts.)

All those golden moments we shared, our first kiss. I still remember the way she looked. She looked...

(Kevin slows up and frowns slightly.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Winnie and Kirk kissing in the hallway. The guitar music grinds down.)

Just like that.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning heavily and looking at them off-screen.)

KEVIN (V/O): What's goin' on, McCray?

Cut to
Ext. Day - Athletic Area

(Close shot of Kirk holding a football.)

KIRK: What do you mean?

(Kirk throws the football.)

(Wide shot of Kevin standing next to Kirk, near the edge of the athletic field.)

KEVIN: I thought you and Winnie broke up.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Didn't I make that clear?

(Close shot of Kirk catching the football from an off-screen partner, as he looks at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: You did.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Then I saw you guys making out.

(Close shot of Kirk looking at Kevin off-screen.)

KIRK: I know. Isn't that weird?

(Kirk throws the ball to the off-screen partner.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk off-screen.)

KEVIN: Then what's going on?

(Close shot of Kirk looking toward the off-screen partner.)

KIRK: I don't know.

(Kirk catches the ball, then looks at Kevin off-screen.)

(Winnie looks off.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at her off-screen.)
