OPENING CREDITS

Fade to
Int. Day - Boy's Restroom at School

(Several kids are crowding around one boy in particular. One kid taps the boy under the chin.)

Once upon a time...

(The boy takes a step toward the mirror, and brushes his hair with his hand.)

A boy's popularity was based on kickball abilities...

(Another kid pushes the boy on the shoulder, then ruffles his hair.)

Pea-shooting range...

(The kid again pushes the boy toward the door.)

And how much of the alphabet he could squeeze off with one burp.

(The boy opens the door.)

Cut to

School Hallway

(Shot of the boy exiting the restroom, and smoothing his hair. The other kids follow him out.)

For the same boy to acquire a comparable level of popularity in junior high school...

(The boy looks past the camera and pauses.)

(Shot of three girls talking to one girl, Karen from Ep 16, in particular. Other students are in the background.)

He's gonna need a girl.

(Closer shot of Karen in conversation with the other girls.)

(Close shot of the boy as he looks over his shoulder at the kids in the background.)

The ceremony rarely strays from tradition.

(The boy looks toward Karen off-screen.)

Fully unprepared...

(Shot of the four girls giggling at the boy off-screen.)

For his certain someone to be surrounded by three giggling friends...

(Close shot of the boy as he looks off and walks across the shot.)

Boy grows thirsty...

(The boy bends over the drinking fountain and looks toward Karen off-screen as he drinks.)

And proceeds to drink.

(Wider shot of the boy drinking, and a kid standing behind him, waiting to get a drink.)

He will continue to drink until the gaggle disperses...

(Close shot of the boy drinking and looking at Karen off-screen.)

Or his stomach explodes - whichever comes first.

(Shot of the four girls in animated conversation.)

Girl...

(Karen glances toward the boy off-screen.)

Acutely aware of boy's presence...

(Close shot of the boy drinking and looking at Karen off-screen.)

Warns her friends that she...

(Shot of the four girls as Karen talks seriously to one in particular.)

Will, in fact, die ...if they abandon her.

(One girl points and they all look toward the boy off-screen, as Karen talks to another girl.)

To no avail.

(The three girls walk past the camera. Karen pauses, open-mouthed.)

She is forsaken, left to yell a meaningless...

GIRL: Uh, you guys!

After them...

(Karen frowns slightly at the girls off-screen, then smiles tightly at the boy off-screen, and turns toward her locker.)

And tend to the business of rearranging her locker.

(Close shot of the boy drinking and looking at Karen off-screen.)

Seeing his opportunity...

(The boy stands up and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand.)

Boy prepares for final approach.

(Shot of Karen glancing over her shoulder, than turning back to her locker.)

He takes one last breath, and lunges forward.

(The boy passes the camera.)

(Shot of Karen at her locker as the boy taps her shoulder.)

Girl feigns surprise.

(Karen turns toward the boy, "surprised".)

GIRL: Oh, God - you scared me! (Smiles.)

(Shot past Karen of the boy smiling slightly. The other kids are watching in the background, smiling.)

And they engage in small talk.

BOY: Hi. (Smiles.)

(Shot past the boy of Karen looking at him.)

GIRL: Hi. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Karen of the boy.)

Feeling the full weight of the moment...

(The boy glances off.)

(Shot past the boy of Karen looking at him, then down.)

Boy realizes that those three gallons of fountain water...

(Shot past Karen of the boy looking off, frowning slightly.)

Have just funneled directly to his palms, armpits, and feet.

(The boy looks at Karen.)

BOY: So, uh...(smiles)...how's it going?

(Shot past the boy of Karen looking at him.)

GIRL: Fine. (Smiles.) How are you?

(Shot past Karen of the boy looking at her.)

BOY: Pretty good.

(Shot past the boy of Karen looking down slightly.)

GIRL: That's...good.

(Shot past Karen of the boy smiling slightly at her, then glancing off.)

Down to his final wisps of saliva...

(The boy glances the off and back, and chews his lip slightly.)

Boy decides that the time has come to quote-unquote..."pop the big one."

(The boy looks at Karen.)

BOY: You wanna go steady? (Frowns.)

(Shot past the boy of Karen looking down slightly.)

GIRL: Sure! (Smiles.)

(Soaring orchestral music begins.)

And just like that...

(Shot past Karen of the boy smiling slightly awkwardly at her.)

The ceremony is complete...

BOY: Good.

(Shot past the boy of Karen smiling at him.)

GIRL: Good. (Nods.)

(Shot past Karen of the boy looking off.)

Leaving the newly-formed couple with...

(Music stops.)

Absolutely nothing left to say to each other.

(Shot of Paul and Kevin looking toward them off-screen.)

PAUL: Man, he looks like he's ready to barf.

Listen to that line.

Paul: Why would anyone want to go steady anyway?

(Kevin turns toward Paul.)

KEVIN: Don't ask me.

(Wider shot of them leaning against the lockers as a couple walks by them.)

PAUL: What's so great about going steady? Personally, I'd rather play the field.

KEVIN: Yeah, I know what you mean.

(Kirk and Winnie walk past. Kevin and Paul watch them.)

Paul was right. You didn't want to get tied down too early in life.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk and Winnie off-screen.)

I mean, look at Kirk McCray.

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Kirk and Winnie as Kirk opens a locker.)

Winnie Cooper had him wrapped around her little finger.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Kirk and Winnie off-screen.)

Thank God I was a free man.

PAUL (V/O): Kevin?!

(Shot of Kevin turning toward Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Huh?

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking at him.)

PAUL: I said, did you hear about Kirk and Winnie?

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and looking down.)

KEVIN: No.

(Kevin looks toward Kirk and Winnie off-screen.)

(Shot of Kirk and Winnie at the open locker.)

PAUL (V/O): Well supposedly...

(Close shot of Kevin turning toward Paul off-screen.)

PAUL (V/O): They might break up. I heard it from Becky Slater.

(Kevin brightens momentarily, then looks off and frowns.)

KEVIN: So, who cares? (Shrugs.)

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking at him.)

PAUL: I hear Kirk thinks Winnie likes someone else.

(Wider shot of Kevin and Paul as Kevin looks at Kirk and Winnie off-screen and shrugs.)

KEVIN: Big deal.

(Paul frowns and looks off in the other direction.)

Oh, great.

(Kevin glances toward Paul.)

Now he clams up. What was he gonna make me do? Ask him?

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: So? (Nods.) Who does she like? (Nods.)

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking at him.)

PAUL: I don't know. But whoever it is, it'll be a big step down from Kirk McCray, I can tell you that. I mean, he's like the coolest guy in the whole school. I don't know who she thinks she's gonna get even half as good as he is, because he's like the...(gestures)...top of the -

KEVIN: Paul...

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: You should really stop worrying about Winnie Cooper's love life.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking away.)

KEVIN: I mean, it's kinda pathetic.

PAUL: I was just saying.

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward Paul off-screen.)

I'd been toyed with too many times to get excited about...

(Shot of Kirk leaning against the lockers as Winnie frowns at him.)

One measley rumor.

(Winnie turns and exits. Kirk slams the locker shut, then leans back and looks the other way as he puffs out his cheeks.)

Cut to
Cafeteria

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking down.)

Besides, Paul and I had plenty to do...

(Very close shot of a "paper football" at the edge of the table. Kevin slides his finger along the edge, spinning the football.)

Without girls getting in the way.

(Shot of Kevin smiling at Paul and holding his hands up.)

KEVIN: It's good. (Smiles.)

(Shot from behind Kevin of Paul as Paul slides his finger along the edge of the table without disturbing the football.)

PAUL: No.

(Shot past Paul of Kevin smiling at him.)

KEVIN: No way! Your finger's crooked!

(Shot from behind Kevin of Paul as Paul again slides his finger along the edge of the table without disturbing the football.)

PAUL: I'm going straight!

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking at him.)

KEVIN: Not that I don't......

(Kevin slides his finger quickly along the table.)

(Very close shot of the football as it spins.)

KEVIN (V/O): Trust you, or anything.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking down.)

PAUL: These surfaces are too slick. (Frowns.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking at him.)

KEVIN: Are you kidding? (Frowns.) This is the best in the school.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul as Paul puts the tips of his index fingers together, with his thumbs vertical, forming the "goalpost".)

PAUL: No way! They are not the best tables...(fades out.)

Competition.

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking at him.)

Accusations. Common cruelty.

(Kevin says something in the background and frowns.)

These were things we understood.

(Kevin kicks the field goal.)

(Close shot of Paul as the ball hits him in in face. He giggles.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen and laughing.)

Why did it ever have to change?

(Becky approaches the table.)

BECKY (V/O): Hi, Paul. Hi, Kevin.

(Kevin stops laughing and looks toward Becky off-screen.)

(Wide shot of Kevin and Paul face-to-face, and Becky standing at the edge of the table.)

KEVIN: Oh. Hi, Becky.

PAUL: Hi, Becky.

(Close shot of Becky smiling at Paul off-screen.)

BECKY: You want to hear something?

(Close shot of Paul looking toward Becky and shrugging.)

PAUL: I don't care.

(Close shot of Becky smiling at Paul off-screen.)

BECKY: I know someone who likes you.

(Close shot of Paul looking disinterested.)

PAUL: Big deal. Well...

(Paul looks at Becky off-screen and shrugs.)

PAUL: Who is it?

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking at Paul, and slightly frowning in disbelief.)

(Close shot of Becky smiling at Paul off-screen.)

BECKY: Well, I can't tell you her name. But her initials are C.H.

(Close shot of Paul looking off.)

PAUL: "C.H." (Frowns.)

(Paul looks at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: "C.H." (Frowns.)

(Paul looks off.)

PAUL: "C.H." (Frowns.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Paul off-screen and frowning slightly in disbelief.)

Big mystery here. Carla Healy.

(Kevin shrugs and glances down, then looks at Paul.)

She was the only female in Paul's life who wasn't a blood relative.

(Close shot of Paul in deep thought.)

PAUL: "C.H."?

(Close shot of Becky smiling at Paul off-screen.)

BECKY: If you're interested, she'll be at the skating rink tonight.

(Close shot of Paul looking at Becky off-screen and feigning interest.)

PAUL: Thanks, I'll keep it in mind.

(Paul looks down.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking toward the football game, then frowning and looking at Becky off-screen.)

(Close shot of Becky looking toward Paul off-screen.)

BECKY: See you guys later. (Exits.)

(Shot of Paul looking after Becky off-screen, then at the football game.)

PAUL: "C.H."

(He frowns and shakes his head.)

PAUL: I wonder who that is?

(Paul looks at Kevin off-screen and shrugs.)

PAUL: Who cares?

(Close shot of Kevin looking toward the game and frowning heavily.)

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Kevin looks at Paul off-screen.)

KEVIN: Who cares?

(Close shot of Paul looking down.)

PAUL: Yeah. Who cares?

(Close shot of Kevin looking down toward the game.)

(Close shot of Paul looking off and smiling slightly.)

PAUL: So...

(Paul looks at Kevin off-screen.)

PAUL: You feel like going skating tonight? (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin looking toward Paul off-screen.)

Cut to
Singing Class

(Shot of Mr. Frace playing the piano. The kids are in the background on risers, holding music books. They are singing "Yellow Bird".)

KIDS SINGING: "Yellow bird, up high in banana tree..."

(Close shot of Mr. Frace looking at the kids off-screen as he plays the piano.)

(Shot of Paul and Kevin standing side-by-side, holding songbooks and singing.)

KIDS SINGING: "Yellow bird..."

(Shot of Winnie holding a songbook and singing.)

KIDS SINGING: "You sit all alone like me"

(Shot past Mr. Frace of the kids singing.)

(The kids get out of sync.)

(Close shot of Mr. Frace frowning at the kids off-screen. He bangs the keys in frustration.)

MR. FRACE: What's wrong with you kids?

(Wide shot of the kids.)

MR. FRACE (V/O): You forget how to sing since yesterday?

(Close shot of Mr. Frace frowning at the kids off-screen, then looking toward his songbook and gesturing.)

MR. FRACE: Alright, we'll try something more contemporary.

(He jabs a finger at the kids.)

MR. FRACE: Page six, West Side Story.

(He flips his sheet music.)

(Shot Paul and Kevin as they flip their songbooks to the page. They whisper to each other instead of singing.)

PAUL: Alls I'm saying is that I think it would be fun to go skating.

KEVIN: I hate skating. Why don't we just go bowling?

PAUL: I'm sick of bowling. All we ever do is bowl, bowl, bowl.

KEVIN: Do not.

PAUL: I'd rather get some exercise, some fresh air.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning slightly.)

KEVIN: It's an indoor rink, Paul.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul frowning at him.)

PAUL: Come on, Kevin.

Alright. This had gone far enough.

(Close shot of Kevin looking forward, and glancing around slightly, while not singing.)

It was time to do what any red-blooded twelve year old would do when his buddy's about to dump him for a girl - torture him for it.

KEVIN: Well, uh, what's the matter, Paul? Wanna skate with Carla Healy?

(Shot past Kevin of Paul frowning at him.)

PAUL: No!

(Close shot of Kevin looking forward.)

KEVIN: Well, I thought you didn't like her anymore.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul frowning at him.)

PAUL: I don't!

(Close shot of Kevin looking forward.)

KEVIN: Oh. Well, you know, I think you two would look very cute skating across the ice, hand in -

(Shot past Kevin of Paul frowning at him.)

PAUL: I'm not gonna skate with Carla Healy.

(Kevin smiles slightly as he looks at his songbook.)

PAUL: I just think it's gonna be fun. We'll go skating. That's all.

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking at his songbook.)

It was hopeless. He was a goner.

(Kevin glances at Paul briefly and smirks slightly.)

One lousy "I-know-someone-who-likes-you," and he's ready to sell out our -

(Kevin looks past Paul toward Winnie off-screen.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Winnie looking toward him while singing.)

Hold the phone.

(Shot past Paul of Kevin taking a small step out and facing Winnie off-screen.)

What have we here?

(Kevin smiles slightly.)

That was no "I'm-glad..."

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Winnie looking toward him while singing.)

"We're-still-friends" look.

(Close shot of Kevin smiling slightly, then glancing off and back to Winnie off-screen.)

That was "Tony, Tony! Take me, I'm yours!"

(Close shot of Winnie looking toward Kevin while singing.)

My God, it was...a moment.

(Close shot of Kevin singing while looking at Winnie off-screen.)

Maybe those rumors about Winnie and Kirk were true.

(Music changes to an orchestra version.)

WINNIE (Singing, with V/O of Maria from West Side Story): Hold my hand, and I'll take you there!

KEVIN (Singing, with V/O of Tony): Somehow!

WINNIE (As Maria): Someday!

KEVIN (As Tony): Somewhere!

WINNIE and KEVIN (As Maria and Tony) Somewhere!

(Paul taps Kevin on the shoulder as the music crescendos, and directs his attention to the door behind him. The camera pans slightly as Kevin looks over his shoulder, toward Kirk holding a sign up to the window: "I'm sorry Winnie.")

(Shot of Winnie smiling at Kirk off-screen.)

(Shot through the window of Kirk smiling.)

(Shot of Paul and Kevin looking toward Kirk off-screen. Paul shrugs.)

PAUL: What'd I tell you?

(Kevin looks at Paul.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin looking off, then looking toward Winnie off-screen.)

Cut to
Int. Night - Skating Rink

(Shot of Paul and Carla on the ice. Carla holds Paul around the neck and skates awkwardly. They skate toward the camera, and wave and smile.)

(Close shot of Kevin on the outside of the rink, with his arms on the retaining wall as Paul and Carla skate across in front of him. Kevin watches them off-screen and frowns.)

Well, one minute you're up, the next minute you're down.

(Kevin glances off.)

(Shot past Kevin as Paul skates up to him.)

PAUL: How's it goin'? (Smiles.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin.)

KEVIN (Sarcastically.): Just wonderful. (Frowns.) The time of my life. (Gestures.)

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking over his shoulder.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Carla and three other girls standing in a group. Carla waves and smiles at Paul off-screen.)

(Shot past Kevin of Paul turning toward Kevin.)

PAUL: She's all over me. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin frowning heavily.)

KEVIN: Paul...(gestures)...she doesn't know how to skate.

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking at him.)

PAUL: Well, what should I do?

(Shot past Paul of Kevin frowning and looking off.)

KEVIN: I don't care.

(Kevin looks at Paul and frowns.)

KEVIN: Why don't you just ask her? (Gestures.)

You could say that I was being unfair.

(Kevin frowns again, and looks off.)

But there were two hours until Mom came back to pick us up...

(Paul and Kevin glance at each other.)

(Close shot of Paul frowning slightly at Kevin off-screen.)

And I was losing the best friend I ever had.

(Paul looks hurt.)

PAUL: You're not mad at me, are you?

(Shot past Paul of Kevin frowning and looking off, then at Paul.)

KEVIN (Sarcastically): Mad? (Gestures.) Why should I be mad?

(Shot past Kevin of Paul looking and shrugging.)

(Shot past Paul of Kevin frowning at him.)

KEVIN: Look let's just skate, OK? (Gestures.)

(Wider shot from behind Paul as Kevin moves to the break in the wall.)

RINK ANNOUNCER (Over speaker): Next song will be couples only.

(Kevin pauses and frowns.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking off.)

RINK ANNOUNCER (Over speaker): Couples only.

(Kevin looks up.)

RINK ANNOUNCER (Over speaker): All others please clear the ice.

(Kevin smiles ironically. "Ooh Baby Baby" by the Miracles begins playing over the rink speaker.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Carla and three other girls standing in a group. Carla waves and smiles at Paul off-screen.)

(Shot of Paul and Kevin. Paul smiles and skates past the camera as Kevin frowns and steps back.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Carla and the three other girls as Paul passes the camera and turns toward him.)

PAUL: We'll do some tag team later, OK? (Gestures.)

(Close shot of Kevin smiling tightly and nodding, then glancing off.)

Well, that was the end of that.

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Carla and the three other girls as Paul skates up to Carla.)

I'd lost him...

(Paul and Carla skate off.)

To a woman.

(Close shot of Kevin looking bored, and glancing off.)

Whatever happened to the pristine days of baseball cards and loogie contests?

(Kevin glances up.)

Since when did women start to rule our lives?

(Kevin looks down and frowns.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie skating up to him.)

WINNIE: Hi, Kevin.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen and smiling slightly.)

Huh-muh-nuh, huh-muh-nuh, huh-muh-nuh.

KEVIN: Hi. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: How come you haven't been skating?

(Close shot of Kevin looking off.)

KEVIN: Oh, I, uh, I hurt my...

(Kevin looks at Winnie off-screen and gestures.)

KEVIN: Ankle.

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: That's too bad.

God, she looked beautiful.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Where's McCray? (Gestures.)

(Close shot of Winnie rolling her eyes.)

WINNIE: Who knows...

(She glances over her shoulder.)

What was this tone?

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

Trouble in paradise?

KEVIN: Something wrong?

(Close shot of Winnie looking quickly at Kevin off-screen, and shrugging slightly.)

WINNIE: No. Well, I was going to ask you something, but I didn't know you were hurt.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Uh, no, it-it's, uh...(gestures)...not that bad. (Gestures.) It's feeling better already. (Smiles.)

Breathe deep, little man.

(Kevin bites his lip slightly.)

Here come's the big one.

(Close shot of Winnie looking off.)

WINNIE: This is really embarrassing.

(Close shot of Kevin shrugging slightly at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Don't be embarrassed.

(Close shot of Winnie looking down.)

Come to Papa...

(A boy skates by bumping his shoulder against Winnie's, and she glances at him.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie looking after the boy.)

WINNIE: Well...

(She turns toward Kevin.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: Go ahead. (Gestures.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: D-do you want to...

(She looks down, then glances sideways, then looks at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Do you want to...skate...

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie expectantly.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin off-screen and nodding slightly.)

WINNIE: With Becky Slater?

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Winnie off-screen.)

KEVIN: What?!

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie squirming slightly and glancing off.)

WINNIE: This is so embarrassing.

(Winnie looks at Kevin and shrugs slightly.)

WINNIE: Becky Slater? (Gestures.) She kind of asked me if I'd ask you.

(Kirk skates by and grabs Winnie by the arm, taking her out of the shot.)

WINNIE (V/O): Kirk! (Laughs.) Wait, I'm gonna fall!

(Close shot of Kevin looking after Winnie and frowning, then making a face and looking forward.)

It's hard to describe what I was feeling at that moment in time. Humiliation?

(Kevin glances off.)

Sorrow?

(Kevin looks at Winnie off-screen.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Kink and Winnie skating toward the camera, holding hands.)

Or was it more...

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen and frowning.)

Intense hostility!?

(Kevin moves to the break in the wall.)

(Wider shot of Kevin as he steps onto the ice and skates toward the camera, which rolls back with him.)

Becky Slater!? Weeks of waiting in the wings...

(Kevin skates between a couple holding hands, and knocks the boy down.)

And all I get is Becky Slater!?

(Kevin skates up close to the camera.)

I'll give you...

(Shot of Becky standing near the wall as Kevin approaches and stops in front of her.)

KEVIN: Becky Slater!

(Shot past Kevin of Becky looking at him.)

BECKY: Yes?

(Shot past Becky of Kevin looking at her with determination.)

KEVIN: Do you wanna go steady?

(Shot past Kevin of Becky as she smiles.)

BECKY : Sure!

(Shot past Becky of Kevin looking at her with determination.)

KEVIN: Let's skate!

(Shot past Kevin of Becky as Kevin grabs Becky's hand and skates off past the camera, dragging Becky behind him.)

(Wider shot of Kevin leading Becky toward the camera. Becky has her free arm out, coasting.)

My first steady girlfriend.

Fade to
Cafeteria

(Shot of Kevin and Winnie sitting next to each other. Winnie is smiling in Kevin's direction.)

Well, I suppose you could say that going steady with Becky Slater had gotten me closer to Winnie Cooper.

(The camera pulls back to include Kirk sitting next to Winnie and Becky next to Kevin. Kevin looks at Becky.)

Although not quite the way I'd pictured it.

(Becky leans forward slightly and looks at WInnie.)

BECKY: Did you hear about Susan and John Rodgers?

WINNIE: What about them?

(Close shot of Becky.)

BECKY: Supposedly...

(Shot of Kirk and Winnie looking at Becky off-screen.)

BECKY (V/O): Susan thought she saw John and Gina together, you know, like together.

(Close shot of Kevin looking from Winnie off-screen to Becky off-screen.)

BECKY (V/O): But they weren't together together...

(Close shot of Becky looking toward Winnie off-screen.)

BECKY: They were just studying together. But Susan might break up anyway. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kirk eating, and Winnie looking at Becky off-screen.)

WINNIE: No way!

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Becky off-screen.)

BECKY (V/O): I don't know - that's what I heard.

(Kevin glances toward Winnie off-screen.)

WINNIE (V/O): I - I can't believe it!

(Close shot of Becky looking toward Winnie off-screen, and speaking animatedly.)

BECKY: She's been giving him the silent treatment, so he's been spending a lot of time with Jessica, you know, like talking and stuff, but I mean...

(Close shot of Kevin looking down.)

Sitting there wedged between my dream girl...

(Kevin glances toward Winnie off-screen.)

And my significant other...

(Kevin glances toward Becky off-screen.)

One thought kept rolling back and forth...

(Kevin looks forward and sighs slightly.)

Through my mind...

(Kevin looks toward heaven and frowns.)

"Dear God, what have I done?"

(Close shot of Becky looking toward Winnie off-screen, and giggling.)

(Shot of Kirk and Winnie smiling at Becky off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin laughing, pretending to enjoy the conversation, then frowning and looking down as Becky continues talking in the background.)

I didn't know this girl. I didn't want to know this girl.

(Close shot of Becky talking animatedly in the background.)

BECKY:...my God, Jessica, I know...

(Close shot of Kevin glancing toward Kirk off-screen.)

KIRK (V/O): Hey, Kev-Bo, check it out.

(Close shot of Kirk as he opens his lips to reveal the skin of an orange wedge covering his teeth. He grunts like an ape.)

(Close shot of Kevin laughing half-heartedly, then looking away and frowning.)

BECKY (V/O): Anyway, I couldn't believe it.

(Kevin raises an eye-brow and frowns.)

Cut to

(Close shot of Wayne at the table, frowning at Karen off-screen.)

(Shot of Karen leaning toward Wayne off-screen, with Norma in the background.)

(Close shot of Wayne holding out his hands to take the plates.)

(Close shot of Kevin turning to the phone as it rings.)

(Close shot of Kevin frowning at Wayne off-screen.)

KEVIN (Whispering): Gimme it, Wayne.

(Kevin reaches for the phone.)

(Close shot of Wayne looking forward and smiling.)

WAYNE (On the phone): Oh, you mean little Kevin Arnold?

(Close shot of Kevin looking off, then sighing heavily.)

(Close shot of Wayne looking forward and smiling.)

WAYNE: Just one moment, please.

(Wayne holds the phone in both hands and smiles at Kevin off-screen.)

WAYNE: Kevin, it's for you.

(Wayne jerks the phone back slightly.)

(Close shot of Kevin trying to grab the phone and missing.)

KEVIN: Wayne!

(Close shot of Wayne smiling, then putting the phone to his ear.)

WAYNE (On the phone): Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to ask who's calling. May I ask who's calling?

(Wayne looks at Kevin off-screen.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking away.)

WAYNE (V/O): Oh, just one moment - let me see if he'll take your call.

(Kevin turns toward Wayne.)

(Close shot of Kevin trying to grab the phone and missing.)

KEVIN: Wayne!

(Close shot of Wayne smiling at Kevin off-screen as he holds the phone.)

(Wayne hands the phone to Kevin.)

(Wide shot of Kevin taking the phone from Wayne as Karen sets the table.)

KAREN: Girlfriend?

(Kevin flips the cord behind Wayne as Karen exits.)

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN (On the phone, quietly): Hello? .......Yeah, yeah..........Look, I gotta go.

(Shot of Norma at the stove as she turns and looks at Kevin off-screen.)

KEVIN (V/O): We're eating dinner.

(Jack enters past Norma.)

KEVIN (V/O, annoyed): Yes! Bye.

(Close shot of Kevin handing the phone back to Wayne off-screen and frowning.)

(Shot of Norma turning toward Kevin off-screen.)

NORMA: Becky Slater?

(Norma hands a drink to Jack off-screen.)

NORMA: Is that the Slater family on Elm Street?

(Close shot of Kevin sighing and frowning as he takes a plate of white bread from Karen off-screen.)

Here we go.

(Kevin slaps down a piece of bread.)

Serve up my love life...

(Karen flips a piece of bread across the shot toward Wayne off-screen.)

For a little dinner conversation.

(Shot of Norma at the stove as she stirs a pot.)

NORMA: Honey, remember the Slater's?

(Norma adds something to the pot.)

NORMA: We met 'em last fall at the PTA fair.

(Norma looks over her shoulder, frowning slightly.)

(Close shot past Carla of Kevin looking at her in mild disbelief.)

Well, that did it. I'd had it up to here...

Cut to

Hallway

(Shot of a crowded hallway.)

With Winnie Cooper.

(Guitar music plays.)

(Kevin walks determinedly toward the camera, frowning.)

It was time to lay it on the line, to force her hand. I was just going to walk right up to her and ask her once and for all what was going on with her and Kirk Mc-

(Kevin slows up and looks past the camera.)

(Shot from Kevin's perspective of Winnie and Kirk as they embrace and kiss.)

(Kevin continues to slowly walk up the hallway, glancing around.)

It was over. I was never gonna to get her back. It was time for a little self-respect. It was time to let go. Time to move on.

(Kevin slows up.)

After all, who needed women? Who needed friends?

(Kevin sighs slightly and frowns.)

I'd just walk alone from now on. Yep, that was me, Kevin Arnold - lone wolf.

(Shot from behind Becky as she quickly turns toward Kevin. The camera pans slightly to include him. She is still hurt.)

BECKY: You're such a jerk! (Frowns.)

(She looks down.)

(Shot past Becky of Kevin frowning.)

BECKY (V/O): Thanks...

(Shot past Kevin of Becky looking at him.)

BECKY: For nothing!

(Becky turns away.)

(Wider shot of Becky turning toward the camera, with Kevin and another bus behind her. Becky frowns as she approaches the camera, which rolls back.)

"Tonight the light of love is in your eyes"
"But will you love me tomorrow"
