"Double Double Date" - Episode 85

Ext. Night - Dance Building
(Music - "You Are Everything" plays.)

(High wide shot across the parking lot of the front of a building. A large banner hangs across it: "McKinley High School", and in big letters: "Spring Formal 72". The hoods of two cars are in the foreground. Couples are gathering and entering the building.)

There are certain nights in your life that are ruled by forces beyond your control - magic, romance, destiny.

(The camera slowly moves in.)

Nights where love catches you by surprise.

Fade to

Int. Night - School Dance

(Shot of a spotlight piercing the darkness. The camera pans down to the crowd of couples dancing slowly and closely. The lighting is from behind, and hazy.)

And things are never quite the same again.

(The camera zooms in on Kevin and Winnie slowly.)

I was lucky enough to have one of those nights.

(Winnie tenderly caresses the back of Kevins's neck.)

And the memory will stay in my life - forever.

OPENING SEQUENCE

Fade to

Int. Day - School Hallway

(Music - "Wild Thing" - The Troggs starts.)

(Close shot of a girl's legs as she walks down the hallway, away from the camera. A guy walking up the hallway looks over his shoulder as she passes.)

One of the major international events of 1972 occurred in the hallways of my alma mater. It was of course the recent arrival of...

(Another guy passes and looks.)

GUY: Oww!

Inga Finnstrom, McKinley High School's first Swedish exchange student.

Cut to

Int. Day - School Library

(Shot of Inga walking through the library. The camera rolls with her as she passes Kevin, Paul, and Ricky sitting at a table. The camera stops on them. Ricky smiles over his shoulder, while Kevin looks on blankly. "Wild Thing" fades.)

PAUL: Can you believe we sent Marvin Grotsky to Venezuela and got her back?

KEVIN: Unbelievable.

(Shot from the guys' perspective of Inga, as she looks around an aisle, then walks off.)

It was the greatest trade in the history of the United States.

(Shot of the guys at the table as Ricky faces them.)

RICKY: Man, if I didn't already have a date...

(Close shot of Ricky.)

RICKY: I'd ask her to the spring formal.

(Ricky nods and smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin and Paul as they look at each other doubtfully.)

(Close shot of Ricky.)

RICKY: Hey, it was just a thought!

(Shot of Kevin and Paul.)

KEVIN: Who're you taking, anyway?

(Close shot of Ricky.)

RICKY: Ramona Storkman.

(Ricky nods and smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin and Paul.)

PAUL: Really?

(Paul smiles, then looks at Kevin and frowns.)

KEVIN: That's great, Ricky. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Ricky nodding and smiling.)

Still, even Ramona Storkman was better than nothing.

(Shot of Kevin and Paul.)

PAUL: You got a date yet, Kev?

(Kevin glances around and gestures.)

KEVIN: Uh, no. No...not yet. I'm still -

(Kevin glances toward Inga off-screen.)

(Shot of Inga from the guys' perspective, as she looks over books in an aisle.)

KEVIN (V/O): Thinking about it.

(Shot of Kevin and Paul. Paul looks at Inga off-screen.)

PAUL: Her?

(Paul frowns at Kevin.)

PAUL: You're dreamin'!

KEVIN: Hey, I was just looking.

But face it, who was I kidding?

(Kevin and Paul look toward Inga off-scren.)

(Closer shot of Inga holding a book, then smiling, and hurrying out of the shot.)

A girl like that?

(Close shot of Kevin.)

A schlub like me? Nothing short of a miracle could ever bring us together.

(Shot of Inga sitting down at a Winnie's table. Inga hands the book to Winnie. Winnie flips it open.)

Until, that is, fate stepped in.

(The camera zooms in on them as Winnie and Inga talk.)

Fate in the form of...Winnie Cooper.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at the girls off-screen. He smiles slightly.)

Cut to

Math Class

(Shot of the teacher turning away from the board and rubbing his hands together, then walking up an aisle.)

MR. PEEL: Triangles can be classified by the length of their sides.

(Shot past Kevin off Winnie looking over her shoulder as the teacher passes through the shot.)

MR. PEEL: A scalene triangle has no equal sides...while an isoceles...

Winnie was my ex-neighbor...

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin looking at her.)

Ex-girlfriend, ex-

(Kevin glances down.)

(Shot past Winnie as she looks toward Kevin and smiles, then looks forward quickly.)

Well...just my ex.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at her off-screen, then looking forward as the bell rings. He looks back to her.)

(Close shot of Winnie gathering her things.)

And, like all exes, we cared for each other...

(Winnie looks at Kevin, smiles, and stands up.)

(Shot of Kevin standing up and looking toward Winnie.)

KEVIN: Winnie!

And used each other for personal gain.

(Winnie moves into the shot.)

KEVIN: I, uh, saw you in the library today. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie as she smiles.)

WINNIE: You did?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Kevin looks off and frowns.)

KEVIN: You were with, uh...

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

KEVIN: That new girl, uh...

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin looking at her and frowning.)

KEVIN: What's her name?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: Inga. (Nods.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin looking off in surprise.)

KEVIN: Oh, yeah, that's it. (Smiles.) Inga.

(Kevin pauses, looks at Winnie, and frowns.)

KEVIN: How do you know her, anyway?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She turns her head slightly and smiles.)

WINNIE: Kevin, do you have the hots for Inga?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin as he frowns and shakes his head.)

KEVIN: No! No, I just...saw you two, together, and, I-I thought it was...interesting.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

KEVIN: That's all.

(Winnie shrugs.)

WINNIE: OK.

(She smiles slightly and walks away.)

(Close shot of Kevin watching her leave.)

Just one more tiny detail...

(Shot of Kevin walking after Winnie.)

KEVIN: And, maybe you could...fix us up.

(The camera pan with him as he approaches her. She is frowning.)

WINNIE: Excuse me?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Well, I just thought that maybe you could...put in a good word for me.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

KEVIN: You...tell her what a nice guy I am and everything.

(Winnie shakes her head and frowns.)

WINNIE: Kevin, are you sure she's your type?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: What's that supposed to mean? What's my type? (Frowns.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: I don't know, I just thought you'd be going out with someone a little less...

(Winnie glances off and back.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: Swedish. (Shrugs.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin as he frowns and nods.)

KEVIN: Well, yeah. You're right. It-it's a stupid idea - let's just forget it.

(He smiles and nods.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She nods and turns away.)

WINNIE: Whatever you say.

(Winnie walks away from the camera.)

KEVIN: Fine.

(Close shot of Kevin looking after Winnie off-screen.)

After all, no sense beating a dead horse. If it wasn't gonna happen, it wasn't gonna happen. Period.

Cut to

Lockers

(Shot of Kevin at his open locker. Winnie slides in between Kevin and the locker, closing it.)

WINNIE: Kevin, I talked to Inga.

(She smiles, and nods faintly.)

KEVIN: You did?

(Winnie nods. Kevin smiles.)

KEVIN: Really? What'd she say?

WINNIE: She said she'd like to meet you. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin as he smiles.)

Yumpin' Yiminy!

KEVIN: No kidding?

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. She nods and grins as she turns and walks up the hallway toward the camera.)

And suddenly all bets were on.

(Kevin hesitates, then trots up beside her, and smiles.)

KEVIN: So, do you, uh, think she'd go to the spring formal with me?

(They continue to walk. The camera rolls back with them.)

(Winnie looks at Kevin as they continue to walk. The camera rolls back with them.)

WINNIE: I'm not sure, but I do know...that she doesn't have a date yet. (Smiles.)

(Kevin smiles and walks ahead of her.)

KEVIN: Thanks, Winnie.

(Kevin looks over his shoulder.)

KEVIN: I knew I could count on you.

(Winnie smiles and looks off.)

What a girl! What an ex! Always there for me. No strings attached...

(Close shot of Winnie squinting and looking off.)

WINNIE: Kevin? Just one thing...

KEVIN (V/O): Huh?

WINNIE: Matt...Stevens.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning.)

KEVIN: Who?

(Close shot of Winnie smiling at Kevin.)

WINNIE: You know, the new guy. He's in your history class?

(Close shot of Kevin smiling in disbelief.)

KEVIN: You have the hots for Matt Stevens?

(Close shot of Winnie as she frowns and shakes her head.)

WINNIE: No. I just want to meet him. (Nods.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking forward.)

Which of course was a reasonable request. Still...

(Shot of then walking side-by-side up the hallway.)

KEVIN: Winnie...

(Kevin shakes his head and frowns.)

KEVIN: I don't think he's right for you.

(Winnie looks at Kevin.)

WINNIE: What do you mean?

KEVIN: Well...(snorts)...he didn't even know when the War of 1812 started.

(He gestures and smiles.)

(Winnie pauses and frowns.)

WINNIE: Kevin, come on - you know...

(She tilts her head and smiles slightly.)

WINNIE: I'm doing you a favor.

(Close shot of Kevin.)

And of course, stated that way...

(Close shot of Winnie. She smiles slightly.)

What choice did I have?

Cut to

Cafeteria

(Close shot of Kevin's back, as he sits down, revealing Matt looking at him.)

MATT: I really appreciate this, Kevin.

(Shot past Matt of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Hey, no problem.

(Shot past Kevin of Matt as he shows Kevin his teeth.)

MATT: Do I have anything in my teeth?

(Shot of both in profile at the table. Kevin sticks a straw in his milk.)

KEVIN: Your teeth are fine. (Frowns.)

(Kevin sips his milk.)

Now, I had no idea why Winnie wanted to meet this bozo.

(Kevin glances off.)

MATT: Cuz, you know...

(Kevin looks at Matt.)

MATT: Your teeth are one of your three most important characteristics.

(Shot past Matt of Kevin.)

KEVIN: That's what I hear. (Nods.)

(Shot past Kevin of Matt. He smiles slightly.)

Still, a deal was a deal...

(Shot past Matt of Kevin looking at him.)

No matter how idiotic.

(Kevin looks off, then smiles as he sees the girls off-screen.)

KEVIN: OK, there they are. (Smiles.)

(Shot from the guys' perspective of Winnie and Inga entering the cafeteria door.)

MATT (V/O): Whoa, she's gorgeous.

KEVIN (V/O): Yeah.

(Close shot of Kevin smiling.)

KEVIN: She's Swedish.

(Close shot of Matt wide-eyed.)

MATT: No, I meant the brunette!

(Close shot of Kevin. He is slightly surprised.)

KEVIN: Oh, yeah, right. (Smiles.)

(Shot from behind the guys as the girls approach.)

WINNIE: Hi guys! (Smiles.)

(The guys stand up.)

KEVIN: Hey.

(Kevin gestures.)

KEVIN: Winnie, this is Matt.

(Winnie turns to Inga slightly.)

WINNIE: And this is Inga.

(Winnie and Inga smile.)

Yep, no doubt about it.

(Close shot of Inga smiling.)

This...was Inga.

(Close shot of Kevin smiling.)

KEVIN: Hi.

(Close shot of Inga smiling.)

INGA: Hi.

(Close shot of Matt smiling.)

MATT: Hi.

(Close shot of Winnie smiling.)

WINNIE: Hi.

(Close shot of Kevin glancing toward Matt, then the girls.)

And with those polite formalities out of the way...

(Shot from behind the guys as the guys sit, and the girls walk to the seats on the other side of them.)

It was time for the main event. Time to play...the dating game.

(The girls sit down.)

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin, as she looks at Matt off-screen and smiles.)

WINNIE: So, Matt. Um, how do you like McKinley so far?

(Shot of Matt and Inga. She smiles, as he looks off and frowns in thought.)

MATT: Well, it's the kind of school...you'll never forget...forever.

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. He frowns and shakes his head slightly.)

So much for bachelor number one.

(Winnie smiles.)

WINNIE: I know exactly what you mean.

(Kevin pauses, then looks at Winnie.)

Hmmm...

(Kevin looks toward Inga off-screen and smiles.)

KEVIN: So. Inga. (Gestures.) Are you having fun in America?

(Shot of Matt and Inga. She smiles and nods.)

INGA: Oh, ja. I like it.

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah. Me too. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Matt and Inga.)

MATT: Hey, Winnie - what are your three favorite activities?

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin.)

Unbelievable.

(Kevin frowns and looks off.)

WINNIE: Well, I like to read, I like to play tennis...and I love to dance.

(Shot of Matt and Inga.)

MATT: I love to do all those things, too!

(Inga looks from Matt toward Winnie off-screen.)

INGA: Ja! Me too! (Nods.)

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. Winnie smiles.)

WINNIE: Oh, what a coincidence!

(Kevin frowns.)

KEVIN: It's amazing.

(Close shot of Kevin frowning and glancing around.)

OK, it was clear the time had come to dump the chitchat and get down to brass tacks.

(Close shot of Inga. She smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin, as he opens his mouth to speak.)

MATT (V/O): Hey, Winnie...

(Kevin pauses and looks at Matt off-screen.)

(Close shot of Matt.)

MATT: Would you go to the spring formal with me?

(Close shot of Kevin looking from Matt to WInnie off-screen.)

(Close shot of Winnie smiling.)

WINNIE: Sure, I'd love to.

(Close shot of Matt smiling.)

MATT: Great!

(Close shot of Winnie smiling.)

WINNIE: Great!

(Shot of Matt and Inga.)

(Bell rings.)

MATT: So we'll talk later...(gestures)...I gotta get to class.

(Matt stands up.)

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin.)

WINNIE: Me, too.

(Winnie gathers her things, and looks at Inga off-screen.)

WINNIE: Come on, Inga.

(Winnie stands up.)

KEVIN: Winnie, wait!

(Kevin stands up.)

WINNIE: Oh, yeah. Sorry, Kevin.

(They look toward the others off-screen.)

Hadn't we forgotten something here?

(Shot of Matt and Inga standing, ready to leave.)

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. Kevin glances at Winnie, then turns to Inga off-screen.)

KEVIN: Inga - you wanna go to the dance with me? (Smiles.)

(Shot of Matt and Inga.)

INGA: Ja, sure. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. Both smile. They look at each other, and smile again.)

Yes! And with those two words, the deal was sealed.

(Shot of Matt and Inga.)

Winnie and I were on our way to the spring formal...

(Matt appears to get a bright idea.)

MATT: Hey, guys! Why don't we double?

(Shot of Winnie and Kevin. Their smiles fade as they look at each other.)

Together.

(Kevin and Winnie look at the others off-screen. Winnie is blank, Kevin frowns.)

KEVIN and WINNIE: Double?

Cut to

Lockers

(Close shot of Winnie near her locker, looking angry.)

WINNIE: What do you mean you don't wanna double?!

(Close shot of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Well, I just don't think it's a good idea, that's all.

(Shot of Kevin and Winnie at her open locker.)

WINNIE: Well I don't particularly want to, either.

KEVIN: Terrific. Let's not do it.

WINNIE: Fine!

KEVIN: Fine!

(Kevin starts to leave.)

WINNIE: It's just Matt doesn't have a car.

(Close shot of Kevin.)

Why was I surprised?

(Close shot of Winnie turning toward Kevin.)

The guy probably couldn't read a stop sign.

(Close shot of Kevin looking off and gesturing.)

KEVIN: Well, Winnie, what if Inga and I wanna, you know...be alone! To talk? (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Winnie sighing.)

WINNIE: Kevin...Matt and I might want to be alone too - to talk!

(Close shot of Kevin.)

WINNIE (V/O): Did ya ever think of that?

Wait a minute.

(Shot of Kevin and Winnie.)

Did she know what kind of "talk" we were talking about here?

(Winnie closes her locker and walks up the hallway past Kevin.)

KEVIN: Winnie, this is your first date with this guy!

(Kevin gestures and frowns.)

(Winnie pauses and turns back.)

WINNIE: Well, it's your first date with Inga.

(They walk up the hallway toward the camera.)

KEVIN: Y'well, that's different.

WINNIE: Different?!

(Winnie looks forward and frowns.)

WINNIE: Kevin, don't worry, we're not going to cramp your style!

(Kevin walks past her, looking forward and gesturing.)

KEVIN: It's not a matter of cramping! (Gestures.)

Even though we were cramping all over the place.

(They pause and turn toward each other.)

WINNIE: Well, we have to do it, so we might as well be adult about it.

(Kevin gestures.)

KEVIN: Fine!

WINNIE: Fine!

(They turn away from each other and exit.)

Cut to

Int. Night - Kevin's Car

(Shot through the windshield of Kevin and Inga up front, and Winnie and Matt back. Music - "Sugar, Sugar" plays on the radio in the background.)

And so we did the adult thing. We doubled. Me, Miss Sweden...

(Close shot of Kevin through the windshield.)

And the guys in the back seat.

(Kevin looks in the rear-view mirror.)

(Shot of Winnie looking toward Kevin, then away.)

Not that I was resentful about it or anything.

(Kevin looks forward.)

KEVIN: So, Inga.

(Kevin looks toward Inga off-screen and smiles.)

KEVIN: How do you like school so far?

(Close shot of Inga through the windshield.)

INGA: Oh, I like history, I like English. (Smiles.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking forward and smiling.)

KEVIN: I like lunch, heh-heh.

(Shot of Inga looking forward blankly, then to Kevin off-screen.)

(Shot of Kevin turning toward Inga.)

KEVIN: It was a joke.

(Shot of Winnie. She laughs at Kevin exaggeratedly.)

(Shot of Kevin glancing in the mirror.)

Something funny?

(Kevin frowns and looks forward.)

MATT (V/O): So, Winnie...

(Shot of Winnie and Matt looking at each other.)

MATT: Who are your three favorite movie stars?

WINNIE: Um...

(Winnie frowns and glances off.)

WINNIE: Well, lemme see...

(Close shot ot of Kevin as he snorts and smiles.)

(Shot of Winnie looking embarrassed, and glancing around.)

WINNIE: Never mind.

(She looks toward Kevin.)

Heh-heh.

(Shot of Kevin smiling.)

(Shot of Inga rolling her eyes.)

INGA: Oh, I love American music, especially The Beatles.

(Shot of Kevin smiling.)

KEVIN: Really? Yeah, me too!

(Kevin looks at Inga off-screen, then back.)

KEVIN: Hey, remember when the Magical Mystery Tour album came out?

INGA (V/O): Uh-huh.

KEVIN: I couldn't believe how many kids didn't understand it.

(Kevin smiles and looks toward Inga off-screen.)

(Winnie giggles.)

KEVIN: What?

(Shot of Winnie in the rear-view mirror.)

WINNIE: Nothing. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Kevin looking in the mirror and gesturing.)

KEVIN: No, come on, something must be funny. (Smiles.)

(Shot of Winnie in the rear-view mirror. She smiles.)

WINNIE: Well, it's just...you didn't understand the album, either.

(She shakes her head.)

(Shot of Kevin smiling.)

KEVIN: What are you talking about?

(Close shot of Winnie.)

WINNIE: You didn't even know who the Walrus was.

(Kevin frowns and gestures.)

KEVIN: Well at least I don't buy every Donny Osmond album that comes out.

(Shot of Matt and Winnie. She frowns and settles back.)

WINNIE: I don't listen to Donny Osmond.

(Shot of Kevin frowning and gesturing.)

KEVIN: Oh, come on - you have that huge poster of him hanging over your bed!

(Shot of Matt and Winnie. She blink rapidly and turns to Matt.)

WINNIE: It was a phase I went through - it was a long time ago...

(Shot of Kevin smiling and gesturing.)

KEVIN: It was last year!

(Shot of Winnie frowning and looking off.)

And there, in a nutshell, you had it.

(Shot of Kevin glancing from the rear-view mirror to the road.)

The double date from hell.

(Shot of Winnie and Matt. They turn toward each other.)

MATT: You know, Donny Osmond is the kind of the guy you'll never forget forever.

(Shot of Kevin glancing in the mirror, then looking off and frowning.)

And the best part was...it was all just beginning.

Cut to

Ext. Night - The Dance

(Shot of a couple walking across the shot. Inga and Kevin approach from the background, with Winnie on Matt's arm, following. The camera rolls back as they get close.)

MATT: I hope the music's good.

KEVIN: Yeah, maybe they'll play a lot of Donny Osmond records.

WINNIE: Or The Beatles. You can explain them to everybody.

(The camera pans with Kevin and Inga. Kevin glances over his shoulder as they Inga pass the camera. Rock music can be heard in the background.)

By the time we got there, we were close to all-out war.

(Kevin pauses and turns around. Inga continues. Winnie slows up, and Matt passes by to the door.)

KEVIN: Winnie, what are you doing?

(Close shot past Kevin of Winnie as she frowns.)

WINNIE: I'm not doing anything. What are you doing?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: I'm not doing anything.

WINNIE: Fine...

(Close shot past Kevin of Winnie as she shrugs.)

WINNIE: We're both not doing anything.

(She walks past Kevin.)

(Shot of both as Winnie passes Kevin. She enters, and pulls one of the doors closed in front of Kevin as he turns.)

And with that we headed on in for a night of pleasure, romance, and of course - let's not forget...

(Kevin walks through the open door.)

Fun.

Fade to

Int. Night - The Dance

(High wide shot of the crowded dance-floor, as "Run, Run, Run" - Jo Jo Gunne plays loudly. The camera moves in, and pans across the crowd of dancers.)

(Wide shot of the four of them side-by-side, with Winnie next to Kevin in the middle. Others walk through the scene.)

MATT: Boy, it's really crowded here.

KEVIN: Yeah. Really crowded.

WINNIE: Definitely crowded.

(Winnie moves a little closer to Matt.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking off.)

By a half hour into the festivities...

(Kevin looks at Winnie off-screen.)

(Close shot of Winnie frowning at Kevin, then looking away.)

It was clear Winnie and I needed to be on separate continents.

(Shot of Kevin and Inga.)

KEVIN: So, uh, Inga. Do you wanna get some punch? (Smiles.)

INGA: Ja, sure. (Nods.)

(Kevin smiles, and they start to move forward.)

MATT (V/O): Good idea!

(Shot of Matt and Winnie.)

MATT: Let's all get some punch.

Not that getting away was that simple.

(Shot of Kevin and Inga. Kevin looks at Matt off-screen.)

KEVIN: Matt, don't you and Winnie wanna go dance or something? (Gestures.)

(Shot of Matt and Winnie. Matt looks away.)

MATT: Yeah, sure! Um...

(Matt turns to Winnie.)

MATT: Winnie?

WINNIE: I'd love to.

(Winnie frowns at Kevin off-screen.)

KEVIN (V/O): Good.

(Winnie leads Matt away, past Kevin and Inga, and the camera.)

MATT: So what are your five favorite songs?

(The camera pans slighty to Kevin and Inga. Kevin looks away and snorts, then smiles at Inga.)

KEVIN: Come on. Let's get a drink.

INGA: Hmmm.

(Inga smiles as they head off.)

(Wide shot past the refreshment table as Kevin and Inga emerge from the crowd of dancers.)

And finally, it seemed we were actually gonna have a chance to be alone.

(They pause at the table and Kevin picks up a cup.)

Get acquainted.

(Kevin ladles some punch into the cup and hands it to Inga.)

Just me, Inga...

(Paul approaches next to Inga, wearing a light-blue suit, with wide lapels.)

PAUL: Hey, Kev, how's it going? (Smiles.)

And of course, Liberace.

(Kevin moves over as Inga sips.)

KEVIN: Paul, this is Inga. (Gestures.) Inga, Paul.

(Close shot of Paul smiling broadly.)

(Close shot of Inga and Kevin.)

INGA: Nice to meet you, Paul.

(Close shot of Paul.)

PAUL: Yeah, I've seen you around school. You know, I think we have a class next to each other.

(Shot of Inga in profile, and Kevin past her.)

(Kevin looks at Inga, then approaches Paul.)

PAUL (V/O): I'm in history in 306, and you're, what, in English -

(Kevin moves close to Paul.)

KEVIN: Paul?

(Paul is still looking at Inga off-screen.)

PAUL: Yeah?

KEVIN: Beat it.

(Paul looks at Kevin.)

PAUL: Oops.

(Paul looks back to Inga off-screen and smiles.)

PAUL: Gotta go. (Exits.)

(Shot of Inga smiling, glancing over her shoulder after Paul, then at Kevin off-screen. She sips her drink.)

After all, Paul understood. This date belonged to me.

(Shot from behind Inga of Kevin.)

The girl, the body, the mind.

(Kevin smiles, takes Inga's hand, and leads her toward the camera, which rolls back with them.)

KEVIN: So, you come from a big city?

INGA: Ja, very big. (Giggles.)

(Inga smiles and slows up.)

(Close shot of Kevin smiling.)

KEVIN: Oh...!

(Close shot past Kevin of Inga nodding.)

INGA: Ornskoldskvik. (Smiles.)

(Close shot past Inga of Kevin. He frowns.)

KEVIN: Well, don't you ever get lonely here?

(Close shot past Kevin of Inga.)

INGA: Ja.

(She looks down and frowns.)

INGA: Sometimes I get lonely (Nods.)

(Inga looks at Kevin.)

INGA: But then, I tell myself, "Don't be lonely"...and then I'm not lonely!

(Inga smiles and giggles.)

(Shot past Inga of Kevin looking blank.)

And I guess that's when it hit me.

(Close shot of Inga smiling.)

When it came to brains, this chick was a Swedish meatball.

(Shot past Inga of Kevin. He smiles and nods.)

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Wide shot of Winnie and Matt. The camera pans as they approach Kevin and Inga. Kevin looks over his shoulder.)

MATT: Hey, guys.

(Kevin turns around.)

KEVIN: Hi. How's it going?

(Shot of Winnie and Matt.)

WINNIE: Fine.

(Shot of Inga and Kevin. Inga is smiling, as Kevin looks at Winnie off-screen.)

My only consolation was, she looked worse than me.

(Shot of Winnie and Matt.)

MATT: Inga, you wanna dance?

(Winnie looks at Matt.)

(Shot of Inga and Kevin. Inga smiles and nods.)

INGA: Ja, sure!

(Shot of Winnie and Matt.)

MATT: If you don't mind, Kevin?

(Shot of Inga and Kevin.)

KEVIN: No.

(Kevin glances at Inga, then looks at Matt off-screen.)

KEVIN: Why should I mind?

(Shot of Winnie and Matt.)

MATT: Hey...(smiles)...I'll even let you dance with Winnie.

(Close shot of Kevin smiling and nodding slightly.)

KEVIN: Perfect.

(Close shot of Winnie frowning at Kevin off-screen.)

WINNIE: Oh, I'm excited.

(Close shot of Kevin as his smile fades.)

("You Are Everything" - The Stylistics starts.)

Sure, what the heck.

(Shot of Matt smiling and moving forward to take Inga's hand.)

This night was in the toilet anyway.

(Shot of Inga smiling as she and Matt exit.)

MATT (V/O): So, what are your four favorite colors?

(Shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen, then forward.)

Still, in a way...

(Kevin looks after Matt and Inga off-screen.)

It all made kind of sense.

(Shot of Winnie sighs, and glances off and back, as a couple passes in front of her.)

(Wide shot of Kevin and Winnie facing each other at the edge of the dance-floor. Kevin gestures.)

KEVIN: So, we gonna dance or not?

(Kevin leads Winnie to the dance-floor.)

After all, I'd ruined her evening, she'd ruined mine.

(They find a spot and turn toward each other.)

We might as well finish this fiasco together.

(They start to dance, not too close together.)

KEVIN: Winnie, what's your problem, anyway?

(Closer shot of them as Winnie shakes her head.)

WINNIE: I don't have a problem. You have a problem.

KEVIN: Me? You're the one who keeps taking the shots!

WINNIE: Well you should hear yourself. You sound so phony.

KEVIN: What about you?

WINNIE: Me?

KEVIN: Yeah, did Matt get your five favorite breakfast cereals yet?

WINNIE: Very funny.

(Winnie looks down.)

Boy, I was mad. Boiling. Furious. But as we danced, something strange started to happen.

WINNIE: Matt's a nice guy.

(They are pretty close now.)

KEVIN: Yeah, well. Inga's nice, too. She's just a little...empty. (Smiles.)

(Winnie giggles.)

WINNIE: Matt's a real dope. (Smiles.)

KEVIN: Come on, he's not that bad.

WINNIE: Neither is Inga.

KEVIN: Yeah.

(Their lips are three inches apart.)

KEVIN: She's got nice...hair.

(Winnie strokes the back of Kevin's head.)

WINNIE: Matt's got nice hair, too.

(Their noses are now touching.)

KEVIN: They both have nice hair.

Like I said...

(Winnie leans her head on Kevin's shoulder.)

Something strange.

(Fade to another shot of them. Winnie holds Kevin pretty tightly.)

(Music comes to the foreground.)

"How can I forget, when each face that I see"
"Brings back memories, of being with you"

(Fade to another shot of them. They continue to hold each other tightly, as Winnie caresses Kevin's shoulders and neck.)

"I just can't go on living life as I do"
"Comparing each girl to you"
"Knowing they just won't do"
"They're not you-oo-ooh"

(Fade to a shot of Kevin's back, as the camera pans up.)

"You are everything, and everything is you"
"Oh-Oh, you are everything, and everything is you"
"Oh-Oh, you are everything, and everything is you"
"Oh-Oh, you are everything, and everything is you"

(Shot of them on profile as Kevin pulls away.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie as she sighs.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: I should get back.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She nods slightly.)

WINNIE: Me too.

(Kevin takes step past Winnie, and looks over his shoulder as she turns toward him. Kevin moves off.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking after him off-screen, then backing up and turning away.)

(Close shot of Kevin looking over his shoulder, then turning, and looking toward Winnie off-screen.)

I wasn't exactly sure what had just gone on out there on that dance floor.

(Wide shot of Winnie looking over her shoulder as she walks away.)

Whatever it was it was crazy. It was confusing.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at her off-screen.)

It was dangerous. And I really, really liked it.

(Close shot of Winnie as she looks at Kevin off-screen.)

(Wider shot of Kevin as Paul approaches behind him.)

PAUL: Hey, Kev.

(Kevin glances at Paul, then back to Winnie off-screen.)

PAUL: You going up to the point afterwards?

KEVIN: I'm not sure yet.

(Close shot of Winnie looking toward Kevin, then off.)

PAUL (V/O): Yeah, I know what you mean.

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie off-screen.)

PAUL (V/O): I'm not sure, either, I mean you have to kinda play it by ear, cuz you know...

(Kevin glances over his shoulder at Paul off-screen.)

I knew Paul was talking...

(Close shot of Paul.)

His lips were moving...and noise was coming out, but...my mind was elsewhere.

(Close shot of Kevin looking back to Winnie off-screen.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin.)

(Close shot of Kevin as he smiles slightly, and nods his head toward the door.)

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin. She nods toward the door.)

(Shot of Kevin as he starts to walk off, still looking at Winnie. The camera rolls with him.)

(Shot of Winnie looking at Kevin, and starting to move through the crowd, parallel to Kevin.)

Suddenly, it was something beyond our control. Fate, destiny, magic...

(Close shot of Kevin looking at Winnie as he walks through the crowd.)

Whatever it was, Winnie and I had become two runaway trains, two heat-seeking missiles...

(Close shot of Winnie looking at Kevin, moving through the crowd, parallel to Kevin.)

Being inexplicably drawn back together.

(The camera rolls with Winnie as she continues to move through the crowd.)

(Shot of a trellis on the wall as Kevin moves into the shot.)

KEVIN: Oh...

(Close shot of Winnie as she joins Kevin.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Hi.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: Hi.

(The music ends, and people applaud.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: You wanna go...talk?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She nods, and glances toward the door.)

WINNIE: Yeah.

(She looks at Kevin.)

WINNIE: Let's talk.

(Shot of Kevin glancing away, then smiling slightly as he takes her hand.)

(Wider shot of them as they walk away, past the balloons at the entrance. The spotlight pans across them.)

Cut to

Kevin's Car

(Shot of a dark road as Kevin's car approaches, and speeds past the camera.)

(Close shot of Kevin through the windshield.)

I knew it was crazy.

(Kevin looks toward Winnie.)

(Close shot of Winnie through the windshield, looking at Kevin.)

She knew it was crazy.

(Winnie looks forward.)

(Shot of Kevin looking toward Winnie.)

And that car couldn't move fast enough for the both of us.

(He looks back to the road.)

(Shot of Kevin's car passing the camera as it slows to a screeching stop at "The Point".)

(Close shot from Kevin's side, as they look at each other. Winnie smiles, then looks forward.)

KEVIN: We're here.

(Winnie looks at Kevin with a big smile.)

WINNIE: Yeah, we're here. Do you think they know we're gone yet?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Do we care? (Smiles.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She smiles and shakes her head.)

WINNIE: I can't believe we did this.

But we had no choice.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin looking at her.)

It was as if the stars and the universe and destiny had bound us together.

(Kevin slides a little closer, and puts his arm around her shoulder.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She looks over Kevin's face.)

KEVIN: Winnie?

WINNIE: Yes, Kevin?

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin. He frowns.)

KEVIN: I'm stuck in your corsage.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She frowns.)

WINNIE: What?

(She glances at her corsage, then back.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin. He points.)

KEVIN: My cuff link is stuck in your corsage.

WINNIE: Oh. (Frowns.)

KEVIN: Here, let me just try and get it.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie as he leans over on her, trying to get his cufflink loose.)

WINNIE: OK.

KEVIN: Don't move.

(Winnie blinks as Kevin squishes her.)
WINNIE: Huh, no problem.

KEVIN: You know, I remember...hearing this story about those kids who...

(Shot from Winnie's side. They are three inches apart.)

KEVIN: When they kissed, their braces got stuck together. And...they had to go to the hospital.

(Winnie looks at Kevin, and speaks softly.)

WINNIE: You didn't actually believe that story, did you?

KEVIN: Not until now.

(He unhooks his cufflink.)

KEVIN: There. I can move. (Smiles.)

(Shot of them through the windshield. He still has his arm around her shoulder. They speak softly.)

WINNIE: Good.

(The look at each other a moment, four inches apart.)

KEVIN: Or, maybe I'll just...stay here for a while.

(Winnie smiles slightly.)

WINNIE: You're so cute. You've always been cute.

KEVIN: I guess that's why you've been crazy about me since the day we met.

WINNIE: I was not. (Smiles.) You were crazy about me.

KEVIN: You're right.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

And that's when it happened. At that moment, all the feelings that Winnie and I had been trying to bottle up...

(Kevin touches her cheek.)

(Shot of both through the windshield.)

Finally came rushing to the surface.

(Winnie glances at Kevin's hand.)

We couldn't hide our passions anymore.

(Kevin touches her lip with his finger. Winnie looks up.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

So I leaned in closer...and kissed her...(he kisses her)...right on the eye.

(Kevin pulls back slightly.)

(Shot of both through the windshield. Winnie glances down, then back to Kevin.)

(Winnie smiles slightly and pauses, then licks her lip and moves closer.)

And then she kissed me...(she kisses him)...on my eye.

(She pulls back and looks at Kevin.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin. The look at each other a few moments.)

KEVIN: What happened?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She shakes her head faintly.)

WINNIE: I'm not sure.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin. The look at each other a few moments.)

And the thing is, neither of us knew. Maybe our aim was off.

(Winnie glances down, and smiles.)

Or maybe it was something else.

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She is smiling softly.)

WINNIE: I was just thinking about the first time we ever met.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah...You were wearing that...little yellow raincoat, and that...stupid, yellow rain hat. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie. She is smiling softly.)

WINNIE: You were soaking wet.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Wayne told me my folks got me a horse. When I ran outside...he locked the door. (Smiles.)

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: And you came to my house to dry off.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah. Right.

(Kevin looks at her a moment.)

KEVIN: So...

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie as she looks at him a moment.)

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: You wanna try that again?

(Shot past Kevin of Winnie.)

WINNIE: I'd like to think about it for a little while.

(Shot past Winnie of Kevin.)

KEVIN: Yeah...Me, too.

(She puts her head on his shoulder, and he leans his against her.)

But the thing is, that was all we did.

(Kevin glances off, then looks at Winnie.)

Maybe it was happening too fast. Maybe we wanted to hold on what we had.

(Music "When A Man Loves A Woman" - Percy Sledge starts. They snuggle a little, and Kevin looks off.)

(Fade to a wider shot of the side of the car, and the lights beyond, as the camera pulls back and up.)

Or maybe we both knew there were other things we had to find, before we found each other. All we really knew for sure was, as we sat there, looking out over the lights of town where we had grown up together, it all felt right. It all felt...perfect.
